In my future-fantasy writings, I intend to introduce a mysterious stranger, with an air of seductive charisma, power, and danger. I'm planning a creepy foreshadowing of his nature through various means, particularly the following pop-culture related exchange, and I'm wondering if it works.

Stranger: ( steps out of the shadows, wearing an evil smile) "Pleased to meet you. Hope you guessed my name."
Protagonist: "What?"
Stranger: "Heh. Before your time. Nevermind."

Get it? :)

I got it, but not because of the Stones. Interview With the Vampire's one of my favourite films.

Absolutely.

And you'll almost never find a pop culture reference that everyone will get. As long as it adds a neat twist to your character but the reference isn't absolutely crucial, those who don't get it will just pass over it and perhaps momentarily wonder. (Or maybe even google it if they're curious enough.)

Got it. I was born in 1980, but I've got a penchant for classic rock and karaoke.

I agree with rugcat that it's not terribly important to have all your readers "get" your references. I find it fun to run across an obscure pop culture reference in a book... something that takes me a minute to figure out, or something that I know not all the other readers are grabbing onto. And what's even more fun is when you see an iconic movie / read an iconic book / hear an iconic song for the first time and recognize all the other things you've watched / read / heard over the years that referred to it.

Did you not see the recent Newbie thread(s) with the subject line "Please allow me to introduce myself"? A man of wealth and taste indeed... I saw another recent one I think went "Please let me introduce myself" but I decided that one wasn't quite close enogh to bother with.

But anyone who doesn't recognize THIS just ain't kewl.:tongue

"Woo woo."

There was a popular song my sister was trying to describe to me (during one of my many periods of not listening to top 40 stations), she kept saying "you MUST have heard it," that I finally heard for the first time about a year later. I immediately recognized it from the description, "Oh, that's that song she was telling me about". perhaps even before the singing started, but WELL before the chorus/title line which goes: "Walk Like An Egyptian."

I dropped out of pop culture pretty much from the '80's on, and I'm still trying to figure out where "Bad Hair Day" originated.

You might also read the "using snippets..." thread.

One of my favorite Rolling Stones songs... which I will now be humming for the rest of the night, thank you very much. *grumble :D

I got it, but I happen to love that song.

I'd look into the logistics of using it though, since song lyrics can be very expensive to use in novels. And a song as well known as that one...hmmm, I'm thinking wads of cash.

Totally didn't get it...even when it was sort of explained. But I'm not a Stones fan, and apparently you'd have to be to understand.

I got it, but that's because it made me think of "The Stand." Flagg uses that line on Lloyd right before he springs him from jail.

I thought of the same thing when I read it. It's a good line and a cool reference, but has been used before.

I totally don't get it, either. I agree with kristi; you have to be a fan to understand?

I get it! It's one of my favorite lines.

(And, at the risk of blasphemy, I like the GNR version better than the Stones version)

Yes, I'm a Stones fan as well. Putting in a line like that is fine even if a significant portion of the readers don't get it, in my opinion, because the dialogue (1) indicates it means something to the character (perhaps a little mystery for some readers), (2) indicates it's something from a previous time, and (3) has the added benefit of pulling a grin from a significant number of readers. A minor thing like this doesn't have to do the third as long as it contributes to the story by doing the first two. The danger in number three is this single line may give up too much to a number of readers who understand the reference (if it isn't a joke or a tease, that is). Make sure you don't mind doing that.

Sure, I got it. I also thought of The Stand when I read it. I was in college and it came on TV and my roommate didn't get it at the time. I had to explain it to him.

Yup, but I'm a stones fan.

Jodiodi is right. Flagg from Stephen Kings novel said that about himself.

EDITCredit where credit is due. ChaosTitan said it first.
