Favorite Characters

I am really super bored right now! So, interest me, what's your favorite character? The one that takes up all the glory and all the attention, all the dialougue and all the action, when he manages to type his way into a scene you told him to stay out of? But those characters can be sooo disobedient, the naughty little things, you know? Maybe he wasn't even an intended character, he just happened to get typed in for one scene as the guy who hands the MC a martini at the bar. But maybe he had a certain charm, a certain irresistable personality, and manipulates you into typing him into only one more scene. He promises you, pretty please with sugar on top, it will only be one more scene! And once you listen to him, it's all over for you. He goes rampant and invades the book. He gets his own name, a girlfriend, a torturous past, everything! Before you know it, he's having an affair with the MC's girlfriend and creating complications that never should have existed, but you love him so much, you can't bear to punish him with a painful death that takes him out of the book and back into your head, where he belongs. So give me a name, why you love the character so much, maybe a few of his evil deeds! So bored right now! Save me! *cries in self pity*

Thankfully for me, my favorite character is one of my two main characters! Pix. She's adorable, funny, and so very very attractive. I think I'm in love...

Wait, being in love with one of your characters smacks of narcissism, doesn't it?

Currenly my little literary weasel is named Owen Lafayette. Tragic, pathetic characters always get to me, and he's got it in loads. He's very disturbed, mentally, and a severe agoraphobic (has not been out of the house in 20 years), but in spite of the fact he manages to manage a multi-million-dollar company, keep the house clean, and play the part of a very reserved, polite, nearly invisible manservant. In fact, he manages to be so invisible that he is continually overlooked and forgotten, which is fine by him. He despises himself and doesn't want anyone to waste their time with his "issues." In fact, he'd prefer just to fade away and die. But I won't let him! Muah ha ha ha...

Also, I had intended that this guy named Connor be a SUB plot, but he keeps making big fat mistakes that get everyone else in trouble. Draft #2 is going to necessarily involve inserting more of him at the beginning, just for the sake of balance. Lots more work for me. What a jerk.

wow. that's a good one. I love my MC--she's pretty bada**, and I think it's important that the MC be the focus of the story. BUT, having said that, I have to say there's another character that I love writing for and about. He'd be the other--always the other--the other love interest, the other hero, the other voice of reason. I loved killing him so muchI found a way to do it again. Why do I love him?

Because he's nothing more than human, and in a fantasy that's fairly rare. I don't kill him for several books though so he has lots of time to develop.

Caris (from the novel I'm editing)
Cherry (from a short story I wrote years ago)
Kris (who's name will probably change, from the novel that's on hold until WOS is done being edited.

Baldric... He's just scary but oh so hot. ^_^() Red hair and eyes, tannish skin, uber-powerful pyrokinetic. Just gotta love it!

You first meet him when another character, Elandra, is thrown into a dungeon with these people. Long story short, this is the standard "people with special powers are distrusted and either killed or enslaved" sort of plot. Elandra is one of a third group who can locate/sense where people with magical gifts are and/or whether a person has a gift. Hence, being thrown into a cell with a group of magic users... not a fun experience.

So, here is Baldric's enterance:

Elandra swallowed and looked up at Xenoi, unsure if she even wanted to know who the girl was talking about. Finally she asked the question. "Who is... Baldric?"

Xenoi and Aysta looked at each other. Aysta nodded and looked back at Elandra. Without a word, she pointed at the far corner of the cell. Elandra turned, not seeing anything in the dark corner at first. Only the vague outline of a person standing there. Moving closer, she made out the details and what she saw made her freeze.

The man was draped in chains. Shackles-- thick ones-- were clamped around his wrists. A thick metal band was clamped around his throat, and some of the chains held him to the wall. He was slumped forward, held up only by those chains. The rest of the chains didn't seem to hold any purpose. Elandra couldn't imagine why they would have him chained up so securely when the others were walking around with only those metal bands around their wrists and ankles and necks.

She was getting a strange vibe from him, too. Her Magic Sense felt utterly confused. It seemed to her that he had great amounts of magical energy and no magical energy at all. Both at the same time. She found herself slowly moving closer to him. His presence intrigued her... and she wanted to help him. She knew it was just her curiosity getting the best of her, but she wished to let him out and understand what he could possibly have done to deserve so many chains covering him.

The man's head snapped up suddenly. He glared at her with such hatred and venom that her heart raced and her blood ran cold from fear. His red eyes seemed almost to glow as he suddenly straightened his legs-- practically springing at her like some crazed tiger ready to feast.

Elandra screamed and turned away, even as a pair of strong hands grabbed her shoulders and pulled her away from Baldric. Looking up, she saw Sihrus staring silently over her head. Turning just her head, she could see the man struggling against his shackles. His eyes were still fixed on her. She could see thin trails of blood running down his arms from where the manacles dug sharply into his wrists due to his struggling and straining against them.

"Why!?" she thought compassionately. "Why does he hurt himself like that in struggling?"

After a moment or two, he seemed to grow weak and tired. He stopped his struggle and let himself just hang against the chains. He lowered his head slightly-- panting-- but kept his eyes on Elandra.

"Come on, Sihrus..." he rasped. His tone was a mixture of loathing and exhaustion. That, as well as the fact that he was obviously hoarse and parched, so twisted his voice that Elandra couldn't begin to imagine what his voice might normally sound like. "Let me kill her. You don't want her alive any more than I do! Think of all the people she's killed. All our friends and family that we've lost because of her and the rest of the wenches and bastards here!"

Of course, can you blame the guy for being pissed off? I mean really... So cute when he gets free, though! (of course, they had to knock him unconcious before they broke out because otherwise he'd have killed everyone in the fort before they left and Elandra wasn't willing to allow that)

Baldric groaned. He sat up stiffly, putting his hand to his head where he had been hit-- his eyes clenched tightly shut. Suddenly his eyes flew open. He held his arms out in front of him, staring at them with wide, surprised eyes. The little bit of sunlight that penetrated the forest canopy shone in his oddly red-orange hair, which was cropped in a careless fashion to be in a strange length between short and medium.

His expression made Elandra feel as though she were trapped in a single moment. His widened eyes were filled with wonder and awe. His lips parted slightly in a look of pure, innocent bliss. He sat like that-- staring at his bare, scraped and scarred arms which seemed that they would be nicely tanned, had he not spent so long in that dungeon-- for several moments before slowly touching his neck with the tips of his fingers.

A small trace of pain intruded on the peaceful expression and Elandra noticed the raw, scratched skin from the band of metal that she had removed from his neck. She watched as he looked down at himself. It was as though he wasn't used to seeing himself in even this partial light. Let alone seeing himself without all the chains draped all over him.

"I'm... I'm out..." He tilted his head back-- raising his eyes to squint painfully at the bits of evening sky that could be seen through the canopy. "I can see the sky. No chains... No more chains..." Tears of joy welled up in his eyes as he lowered his head, hugging his arms tightly around himself.

But, most importantly... Here is my favorite line by him:

Elandra caught the cold glint in his eyes before he looked up to pay attention to where he was walking. She sighed, leaning her head against his shoulder. "So... You're not going to kill me then?"

"No," he stated simply. "But only due to our agreement. I may have a horrid temper and hate almost everyone, but I am also a man of my word."

No worries - we can share! I'm sure your Jenner is different from my Jenner. It's not an extremely common name, but it's been used before. The Secret of NIHM comes to mind...

yeaaah except it's called MRS. FRISBY AND THE RATS OF NIMH in the book version isn't it?

my MC from the story I'm editing is one of my favorites. She is a harpy and her name is Aello and so was extremely interesting to write, but I ended up liking her and so (hopefully) making her likable to the reader...and then the mother of the MC in my WIP is my favorite in that story. She's Medea from Jason and the Argonauts and also very interesting to write.

I should've been born greek.

My favorite sidekick is Sidney

She wasn't going to be a minor part, but I didn't intend for her to invade half of my WIP, either. I finally had to make her stomp off in a tantrum to get her away for a while!

This pretty much sums up her personality (language warning):

Two blocks later I sat down on a stone divider and put my head between my knees. It was still raining and the back of my pants were going to get soaked, but I didn’t care. I watched the rain drip off my fingertips. Sid stood in front of me, hands in her pockets, waiting as I mulled things over.

“What do you think I should do?” I asked.

“Honestly? I think you’re fucked.” I looked out from under my hood. She shrugged. “Not much you can do. I mean, you could go home for a while, but they’d probably find you there. Got any relatives in Australia?”

“There was leader from Australia at the meeting last night.”

“Like I said, you’re fucked.”

“Thanks, Sid, that helps a lot.”

“That’s what I’m here for.”

Female: Rebecca. I planned on her being more of a minor character but she had other ideas. She's really funny and very talkative.

Male: Joseph. I just love him. He's my ideal man that I still don't have.

He's Scottish... rugged... funny... romantic... a little tragic in the beginning... giving... protective of his family...

Derrick. His brother is my MC but Derrick just keeps butting into everywhere he's not supposed to be. He's a total smart-ass and completely full of himself but he's got a bucket-load of flaws all his own. I love him to death!

My fave character from a real novel is: Edmond Dantes

Indeed, it is.

I just think Bluth did an excellent job with Jenner's screen version. Very creepy. Not as cool as Nicodemus, but creepy for sure!

My favorite character from a novel is Marisa Coulter from the His Dark Materials trilogy. (spoilers) She does horrible awful things but in the end she is redeemed by her love for her daughter, and she plunges into oblivion anyway...so cool.

My favorite character out of all I've written has to be John in my trunked novel. He is a composite of all the good Southern men I've known. He's the MC's conscience. He's the voice of reason when my MC is spiraling out of control. One of the hardest scenes I ever had to write was when the MC finds him dead and then has to speak at the funeral. I cried along with the MC.

My favorite character from someone else's work is Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye. I just love him. If I had to pick any fictional character, though, it would be House from the television show House, MD. Maybe I have a thing for flawed men.
