It depends on the magazine's format. From my experience, it's never less than a few hundred, and sometimes up to a thousand.

This is good advice. It is always good to buy a couple of copies of the magazine you want to write for. This will give you an idea of the types of stories they publish, but will also tell you the rough word count of each page.
I spotted a few outlets that still pay by the column-inch, which has got to be bothersome for beginners who've never been in journalism -- but I bet it helps separate the goats.
