When a publication states it pays $X/page for short stories, how many words do they usually cram on a page? Can you guesstimate 250 or do some pubs get up to 1,000 or more? :)

The shorts I do for British mags are usually 1,000 - 1,200 - and they take up a page.

It depends on the magazine's format. From my experience, it's never less than a few hundred, and sometimes up to a thousand.

The best way to know is to buy and read a copy of the magazine in question, which is a wise thing to do with any magazine you want to submit stories to.

Yep mine too, they can range from as little as 800 per page to 1200. It would depend a lot on how many words the overall story has in it.

This is good advice. It is always good to buy a couple of copies of the magazine you want to write for. This will give you an idea of the types of stories they publish, but will also tell you the rough word count of each page.

I spotted a few outlets that still pay by the column-inch, which has got to be bothersome for beginners who've never been in journalism -- but I bet it helps separate the goats.
