Does anyone know any good contests coming up for short screenplays? Doesn't have to be exclusive to shorts but at least have a seperate branch for shorts. Any recommendations would be appreciated. :)

Just about to tell you about the British Short Screenplay Comp, then realised the deadline was an hour and 15 mins ago. Sorry.

Just stick 'short screenplay competiton' in a search engine, that should do you.

Thanks zahra. Thing is I'm really wary about scams. I don't want to spend money sending in my stuff and get shafted.

Thanks Steven, that link is really helpful :) I have another question. Don't want to start another thread so I guess I'll ask here. Is it alright to post more than 10 pages of screenplay in the 'Share Your Work' section if it's a short and it only goes a few pages over?

Sure, but why not edit it down to 10 pages? A little editing never hurt a script. :)

There was an interesting article on shorts on Bill Martell's site this week, worth reading if you haven't already seen it:
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MY SHORTS?

Do shout out about such contests if you know a deadline is looming! I didn't even know there was a British Short Screenplay Comp!

Thanks dpat I'll try to make sure it stays below that then, if possible.

This one is over too but if anyone wants to submit their short script to a contest next year, I warmly recommend Slamdance. You'll get one page of comments for free. (should be less if your script is just a couple of pages). I did it a few years ago, the feedback was very sound and helpful.

Oh, honey, sorry. There's been so much stuff about competitions, I thought people would know. I know it's been mentioned here more than once.

One good way to always know about these things is to join withoutabox. It's for film competitions and festivals, and you can set reminders for yourself for the ones you are interested in.

It also makes entering itself really much more organized.

Any search engine should do it. And Hollow, if you join withoutabox, they rate the comps. Check out the prizes, the success stories and the sponsors of each, and it should give you an idea how good they are. If a competition can't give a good prize, and industry contacts should be one of them, I wouldn't really bother. I think First Glance does a good shortie.

Good luck, and yes, MovieBytes is a great source. They do a 5-page monthly comp, too, which has no prize but the kudos, but costs nothing, and you get critiqued by other members. It's great practice - must do it myself one day!

If you mean you don't want to enter a contest and not even make the quarterfinals, that's a chance every entrant has to take.

Register your short with the WGA or WGAeast before sending it to anyone if you want a good measure of protection from plagiarism.

Also if you're looking to get produced, a logline posted (for free) on inktip.com or nefilm.com or perhaps other logline databases will yield student and independent producer requests to read your material (though it can take anything from months to years to find any piece a home).

Good luck!

I mean I don't want to get scammed. I hear there's a lot of fake competions. I was sure you guys would know some legit names. Thanks for all the help.

BTW, the forum that does a contest for 5 pages is called 'Moviepoets'. It's a great site.

And check out the WildSOUND screenplay festival; it does a short screenplay competition where the prize is a reading by top pro actors and feedback from an industry pro. The deadline is August 1 for shorts. The current winner is Rae Dawn Chong, who I remember from 'Soul Man'! Hoot!

But really, withoutabox is great for reminders and easier submissions, IMO.

You can always find one you think you want to enter and then check the bewares and background check forum, or ask around here...

Has anyone here submitted to the Eerie Horror Film Festival before? I was curious whether or not any feedback was given on scripts that do not win the competition.

From their website, I'm gathering that you get jack unless it places.
