Consignment Rates?

Although my books is being sold at our local Borders, two new small, independent bookstores have opened up in close proximity to my fitness studio. I was thinking about having them sell some of my own copies, rather than having them order from my publisher. What is the average acceptable rate for selling your own books? I'm thinking that the bookstore gets 40% of cover price, but I could be wrong.

That the rate my local bookstore asks for. The only problem is they want all of them to sell before paying me.

Kinda depends on how much they cost you in the first place. (There's people who are baffled why they can't sell their $26.95 150-page self-pub book, which they buy from their "publisher" at the Extra Special 20% Authors Discount.) If you're using them to drive traffic to an event you're making money from, you could afford to discount them to your cost, but otherwise you might actually want to turn a profit.
