A few weeks ago I finished my first book. Last week I started the process of sending out query letters. Got a bunch of rejections and other reponses that told me; "don't call us we'll call you." The good news is I got handful of postive repsonses- three from publishers (one from an agent) and one from an agent. Each wanted to see a collection of chapters. So what do I do know. The material is in their hands- has been for a few days- how long should I give it? Would it be okay to call them up on the phone to make sure they got the information.

One other question, a fifth possible positve repsonse came from a company located in Scottland. Are there any american writers out there who have signed with foreign companines?

Thanks for any possible feedback

First, congrats on the requests for partials! Woo-Hoo!

Second...brew some coffee, rent a few movies...start work on your next book. It's probably going to be a while.

I'd advise you not to call. That seems to be a pet peeve of many agents and pubs. Check their websites. Often they give the standard wait times.

An agent has my full--her site says 8 weeks. If I don't hear from her in 3 months, I'll send her a "did you receive it?" email.

Good luck!

Yeah, what Lily said. I think the standard waiting period is about 6 - 12 weeks. In the meantime, you should probably check out the publishers and agent in the "Bewares & Background Checks" forum. It's a great resource.
