Does anyone know of markets above the .10/word range that accept fantasy short stories? Do mainstream pubs like The Atlantic or New Yorker ever accept them (I'm guessing not, but just curious).

Thanks!

I believe the New Yorker is alone in doing so. Best bet is as suggested, look at Duotrope.com and search for fantasy. Look at the ones with professional rates and see what they offer.

Best of luck,

I don't know of any fantasy markets that pay more than ten cents per word. Well, a couple of the children's magazines pay a little more, but the stories are so short you usually make less. I've never read a fantasy story in any of the big pubs such as The Atlantic or The New Yorker.

Ten cents per word isn't too bad for genre fiction. Seven cents per word is considered professional rate.

Correction on my part: I wasn't specific enough. I know the New Yorker is the sole magazine that takes fiction and pays good money (others pay less -- I understand the New Yorker pays well though), but I don't know what they're policy is about fantasy.

According to Ralan (www.Ralan.com) Zoetrope pays $1200
Baen's Universe pays 6-25c/word (note this market is currently closed)
Clarkesworld pays 10c/word

Actually, there are quite a number of magazines that accept fiction and pay very, very well. The New Yorker may be the highest paying, but not by much.

Writers of the Future takes fantasy and SF, and pays better than $.10/word. It was closer to $.20/word when I won, but I believe it may have come down to $.15/word. (This doesn't count prize money, either.)

The New Yorker was recently discussed at The Rejecter. The stories there are mostly arranged by insiders at publishing houses; there is .000001% slush printed.

This doesn't go along with my experience, and certainly doesn't go along with the names of all the writers published there each year.

And it goes completely against what the fiction editors at The New Yorker say.
