I thought I'd ask the brain trust -- in Victorian times, what were the parameters leading to a shotgun wedding? Obviously PG out of wedlock but how extreme did they get? What about just being alone together for a little bit?

That would do it, especially if they were gone alone for a few hours. Her family would demand marriage to restore her honor.

How you doin' fellow Hoosier? :D

New plot twist -- they elope!

Hey, fellow Hoosier, we're doing OK up here. Plenty dry but DH is baling hay like crazy, which is good. Keeps him occupied ;)

Was this a chick thread? Damn. Too many years of working in 9-1-1 Centers (which are usually about 90% ladies) has diluted my estrogen filter.

Not restricted to chicks, just used to most romance authors having that extra X. Please stick around! We could use a man's input. :hi:

Hmm... musket wedding? No...no... doesn't have that pop to it.

Flintlock wed- no.

I know - Marry my daughter or else I kill you - short, sweet, to the point...

Hi Jedi! How do ya like bein' surrounded by us chicks? :hi:

Like I said, I worked in 911 for 10 years, which is a female dominated profession. I am used to being the not only the only guy, but the only straight guy around a bunch of chicks. I can handle it

I had actually gotten an idea for a love story and had started it but lost steam on it. I think I stopped around 4-5 chapters.

"Well, this Mr. Butler took a Charleston girl out buggy riding... She couldn't have been very nice or she wouldn't have gone out with him in the late afternoon without a chaperon. And, my dear, they stayed out nearly all night and walked home finally, saying the horse had run away and ....guess what--
He refused to marry her the next day!
He said he hadn't --er--done anything to her and he didn't see why he should marry her. And, of course, her brother called him out, and Mr. Butler said he'd rather be shot than marry a stupid fool. And so they fought a duel and Mr. Butler shot the girl's brother and he died, and Mr. Butler had to leave Charleston and now nobody receives him.
Did she have a baby?
Cathleen shook her head violently. "But she was ruined just the same."

GWTW--oh yeah!

I love GWTW, and have read it over and over so that I know exactly where that quote is in the book--as Scarlet and Cathleen Calvert are preening upstairs at the Wilkes's barbecue--just after Rhett has looked at Scarlet as though he knows what she looks like with just her shimmy on...lol Glad to know I'm not the only GWTW fanatic.

far from the madding crowd
Upper, middle, or working class? There were differences.
Of the same class? Very important. No coal miner is going to be able to force the Duke of Whotsit to marry his daughter - no matter the weapon used.

That's a whole 'nother jar of pickles! It was honor amongst the ruling class. Maybe in the middle class too. But working class? Heck, no. Your story actually sounds like a very interesting twist on the idea of honor! Go for it!!

I guess they would be middle class but in the Civil War era -- mid-1800s -- in the US. This one's on hold now. But thanks for your input, everybody :)
