I don't know, some grad student might open a wormhole in his basement tomorrow.

Anyone read the story in Analog about 10 years back when a scientist realized that everytime you fire a particle accelerator, a universe explodes?

They then found themselves in the unenviable position of being schoedinger's cat. Would this time be the time THEIR reality ended? Would they even know, since they'd be continuing in another parallel universe unabated?

I read some article where the Brit physicist daddy shot the whole parallel universe thing down (in so far as "every quantum potential outsome spawns a new Universe" etc)

Bloke says that Gravity crosses between/leaks away into other dimensions (explains the strange weakness of Gravity as a force, puny cosmic force, I defeat all the Earth's gravity wi' a bleedin' small magnet, I do) and forces anything with more than quantum mass into a single "existence"

There may be other Universes in the sense of big branes hovering/fluctuating just off of ours, but when they touch it triggers another Big Bang sort of cataclysm. Wonderful discovery, but the Discoverer and her Universe have just been obliterated.

But yes, you're right, supposedly the 'brane' theory stuff has never had a smidgin of experimental data to back it up ... hence 'There may be other Universes ...'

I'd salute the on-going debates of Science sooner than I'd salute the unthinking assumptions and acceptance of unproven 'theory' scientist/mortals fall into.

The facts of reality being more important, after all, than undue dedication to the mere procedures of science.

But ... why do you say "parallel" universes?

I'd think that a 'parallel' universe would be one we're most unlikely to travel to, since parallel things seldom intersect?

Me, I'm looking for the non-parallel universes: a nice little universe at an exact intersecting right angle ...

I will allow it to have one 'parallel' thing in it though, awaiting ...

Okay, it's a rather wide range, but I'm guessing between 10e0 and 10e129 years.

Just as a reference, our current Universe is widely believed to be 2*10e10 years old.

Especially since this is in "Science Fiction/Fantasy" rather than Science Fact, I feel I can and should mention a pertinent SF story. I forget the name, but this is an older story by Larry Niven and features his Star-Trek-like transporter system that's used worldwide and featured in several other of his older stories. In this one they're experimenting with transporting between Earth and Outer Space (Low Earth Orbit). Just mentioning it in this thread almost gives it away, but I thought it was a great story. Actually, I really enjoyed all of Niven's fiction from way back when.

Michael Crichton (formerly one of my most favorite authors) uses a similar trick in the novel "Timeline" when someone asks "How did you make the machine that brings them back to our time?" The answer starts off with "We didn't make it and we don't know where it comes from. ..."

I don't think it'll ever be possible.

I think it's a pretty good plot device, though not enough to replace a plot.
