Mods: if there is a better place for this, please move it.

A family member has written a family history (approximately 15,000 words.) Her husband would like to "publish" it to give it to family members and a couple of historical societies, the local library, etc. so we are talking at most 100 copies.

I'm looking for ideas on how to do it cheaply (he was dismayed by what vanity presses would charge him and the number of copies he would have to purchase.)

There is a family member who can set up it up in Pagemaker.

Lulu or local printer?

I'm thinking something along the lines of a chapbook with saddle stapling/or stitching, but I don't know if that would be practical with the length of the piece. One printer suggested that he could put it at the end of a big run but that would mean that we wouldn't necessarily get the paper and ink we wanted but only an approximation - but he would be able to give us a better cost.

Any insights (or websites) that anyone can give would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi S'Fool - I've done quite a few family histories of varying lengths (up to about 35,000 words). What I do is print the material myself at a copycenter and either have them punch it for three ring or do that myself and then get a very nice three ring cover - not a notebook, a report cover with clasps that fold over. These work very well for family members and for local historical societies. I've printed and sent out close to 100 copies of one of them (the longest one, of course). Puma

I used Lulu.com for this very thing last Christmas. I used perfect bound and one of their stock covers. It took me a very long time to get it into .pdf format in my computer, because I wanted to use a certain font that the Lulu converter didn't support, but it was worth it. If you aren't worried about the font, you can use the lulu converter.

They even did a very nice job with the pictures I included.

Mine was about 100 pages, 6x9 trim. Cost me about $6 or $7 each.

At that length it could be more cheaply produced by a copy shop, I think. Depending on the num,ber of pages it could be stapled or perfect bound for a lot less than an online service and avoid shipping charges.
