But will there be a single scene anywhere in the Shanarra movie even remotely as mind-boggling cool as Gandalf vs. the Balrog (in Fellowship OR Towers), or Eowyn vs. The Witch King?

I think not. Allanon couldn't hold a magically lit candle against Gandalf.

I haven't read that book in a while, but when is this movie supposed to be coming out? Must be some recent news....?

Edit: Okay...just found the thread and the resulting news clip. They're planning on bringing the second book-The Elfstones of Shannara-to screen first. That's probably a good choice. The first one is very similar to LOTR. Elfstones has a lot more action in it (if I remember correctly-I haven't read these books in a while)...and again (IIRC) I believe Allanon does battle the main demon a few times, at least once in air. Hopefully, it's done well (like LOTR) and not poorly (like Eragon).

Actually, it was Eowyn vs. The Witch King; he was turned into a Nazgul (and referred to as The Witch King in the book). The Nazgul were all originally Men, lords of their lands, who accepted a ring from Sauron. Their wills were subjected to Sauron through the rings, and of course, Sauron wasn't exactly a nice dude. :tongue

So, what movie were you watching? ;)

Who says the movie will be anything like the book? There may be wonderful scenes that appear nowhere in the book.

Good point. This seems to be a common occurence with fantasy adaptations these days, including JRR's and JKR's.

james has a point: moreso maybe than the books the movie is 'based' on, it's important to note who's doing the screenplay and directing, too, as perhaps a very strong indication of what to expect in terms of quality.

I know it was Eowyn vs. The Witch King, I was questioning the mind boggling coolness of it. It would have been cool, but that cheesy line and the shampoo ad flick of the hair ruined it for me. If I'd been said witch king I would have stabbed her in the face while she posed.

Yeah, unfortunately, other than the briefest flash of white light when Merry stabs him behind the knee, there's no clue why he suddenly goes from bad-ass to whimpering on his knees waiting to get stabbed in the face. Alas.

Still, I saw RotK in theaters 5 times, and it got a massive cheer in 4 of them.

The 5th? I saw RotK in Puerto Vallarta, in English with Spanish Subtitles. The crowd laughed, cheered, and gasped at all the same scenes as American audiences... EXCEPT that one, in which case they were all stone-cold silent. I had originally guessed it was a more sexist society, and none of the men in the audience (having just seen ghost warriors, giant elephants, and an undead wraith flying a black dragon-looking beast) could suspend disbelief enough to think a woman could kill that thing.
