This question just came to me:

When does a short story becomes a novella, a novella becomes a novel?

I've been writing a series of stories that average fifty pages divided into about 10 chapters. Kind of like Kafka's "Metamorphosis". I've been calling them short stories, but would "novella" be more appropriate?

Thank you. :)

I don't remember the minimum for short stories, but they go up to about 30,000 words. Novellas are about 30-60,000 words. Are you referring to your individual stories when you ask if novella would be more appropriate, or the whole work? Is it a collection?

I was referring to the individual stories, which I'm putting into one collection.

The link ccarver30 gives is exactly right. Short stories to 7,500 words, novelettes to 17,500, novellas to 30-40K, depending on genre.
