Hello all,

Got an interview next Friday for a job as Comercial Features Writer with a local newspaper. I have been asked to prepare a company profile to take with me. Can anyone offer me any advice on writing one of these?

Many thanks. M

You could stop by a couple of local businesses and ask for an old copy of their trade magazine. Flower shops, radio and TV stations, plumbers, hardware stores, all have trade mags specific to their businesses. They'll often get copies in the mail even if they don't subscribe. Company profiles seem to be regular features in these mags.

A few phone calls would probably be the fastest way to find a few of these. Then you'd have some real world examples rather than opinions.

Try looking in the media/press release section of some company Web sites and see if you can find a backgrounder that is a company profile.

Thanks people. I've done some research and should have the thing finished by tomorrow morning. May post it on here for some feedback before the interview on Friday. M

I'm looking for feedback on this company profile. Thanks in advance. M

The Foundation for Art & Creative Technology (FACT) is the UK's leading organisation for the development, support and exhibition of film, video and new and emerging media. The organisation endeavours to present the most innovative work by artists at home and abroad, challenging audiences to view new media from a different perspective.

Founded in 1988 by Eddie Berg under the name Moviola, FACT has commissioned and presented over 100 digital media artworks with artists including Mark Wallinger, Barbara Kruger, Christian Jankowski and Isaac Julien.

In February 2003, Eddie Berg unveiled the FACT Centre, a multimedia complex situated in Wood Street, the Ropewalks area of the city centre. The multimillion pound centre, designed by architect Austin-Smith Lord, houses three flexible gallery spaces, a state-of-the-art cinema, a multimedia suite and a café. Such world-class resources help support artists in the production and presentation of their work as well as offering a unique experience to the general public. The building is minimalist, yet strikingly dramatic with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

The cinemas are managed by Picturehouse UK, an art house chain with a total of 18 branches across England and Scotland. Picturehouse endeavours to key into local interest with their programming, supporting local filmmakers as well as mainstream productions. FACT’s auditoriums are equipped with cutting-edge technology such as THX sound and digital projection capabilities. Additionally, each screen is fully licensed allowing patrons to enjoy an alcoholic beverage with their film. The centre runs a membership scheme, offering patrons such incentives as discounts on admission, invitations to special events and regular newsletters to their door. The cinema screens are available for corporate hire, acting as the prefect venue for a conference or seminar.

FACT delivers its creative polices and objectives through three separate programmes. Firstly, the Exhibitions Programme refers to the projects, presentations and commissions masterminded by the Exhibitions Team. This includes projects exhibited with the FACT Centre as well as with affiliate organisations at home and abroad. With over fifteen years experience behind them, the Exhibitions Team has developed a flexible, efficient and responsive policy that has enabled them to work with a variety of cliental.

Secondly, the Collaborative Programme established in 1992, develops strategies that engage participants as producers rather than consumers of the moving image and new media. It provides a professional and supportive structure in which artists can make new work, extend and develop their practice and establish new contexts for presentation and critical reception.
And thirdly, the Structural Programme provides projects and services to support and develop the national infrastructure for artists and exhibitors working with video and new and emerging media forms.

Upon its unveiling in 2003 the FACT Centre was the first purpose-built arts project in Liverpool for more than 60 years. FACT is now Britain’s leading centre for film, video and new media art and played a crucial part in Liverpool’s successful bid to become European Capital of Culture 2008.

The company profiles I write for my local paper are for businesses and not 'general public' so you might experience differences of opinion with your editor.

Just remember short sentences and short paragraphs. Some of my paragraphs are only a sentence long. I suppose it makes it easier to read, that's what my editor prefers.

With my profiles, I always have quotes. Businesses are usually very open to getting interviews because it is more publicity for them. It would be unrealistic to expect you to gather quotes on a sample, but just keep that in mind later.

For your profile, it sounds like a through description, but it may be more interesting in noting how the company might help the audience in some way. For my audience, business owners, I try to focus on something like a business motto the company goes by or information on how they can use the data to their advantage.

All in all, the profile is very good and with lots ot data to mull over.

Oh and remember not to fall in too much with copy from a website as to sound like an advertisement. It is okay to tell your audiance a little about the products and services. Be careful about throwing in words, like "acting as the perfect venue". Perfect sounds a little like you're pushing the service. *My personal opinion* Try "potential venue" or something to suggest what it could be used for rather than implying that it is the best thing to use.
