I've only done something like this once before and. . .I swore to myself I would never do this ever again. I swore. Oh, God, I'm so confused.

I. . .I was out of inspiration, that's all. I figured. . .I figured a writing exercise would help get me going again, y'know?
But. . .but none of the exercises worked.

So. . .so I, uh. . .I. . .I. . .

I WROTE A FANFIC!!!

*sob*

Oh, God, don't look at me!

You're going to writer's hell!

You'll be strapped to a chair, while nasty demons sit infront of you with pen and paper; writing the stories that you have in your head but with poor grammar and spelling. Then they publish them in your name!

Me <-- Currently dying of laughter.

Akuma, welcome to the club. A few years ago, I wrote an entire fanfic novel. It's still quite popular, and no, I'm not going to tell you what it was. At this very moment, I am cannibalizing the characters I invented for a new novel. So as you can see, it was helpful. Don't feel bad!

On the other hand my husband teases me mercilessly every time someone posts a review and I squeal with delight.

My opinion: fanfic is a great way to get instant gratification, fans, and feedback.

I didn't stop writing fanfic when I got published, and I'll never stop. It's my playground, my schoolroom and a fundamental way of how I relate to fiction both as a writer and as a reader.

I hold people who put down fanfic and fanfic writers in the deepest contempt.

Actually, you should just build a story around your post. It was great. Sort of a Bridget Jones as a writer.

Then again, Star Trek and all that Arthur stuff is really just a collection of ongoing fan fic.

I reserve my deepest contempt for child abusers, rapists and ex-boyfriends. Those who decry fanfic don't really figure on my radar.

Name's Hunter. I'm a fan. A ceiling fan, to be precise. It was a cool February afternoon when a brunette burst into the family room and turned me on. And not just on, but on high.

Now I ask you: what kind of a dame wants high-speed ventilation in February?

As I soon found out: A desperate one.

**

What? That's not what fanfic means? Ah, crap :(

That is filled with awesomeness. Just so you know. :)

fanfic

The trouble with fanfic is that it's usually illegal to publish, even online, it's using someone else's property without permission, something no writer should even consider doing, and it's time you could be spending writing something of your own.

I don't hold fanfic writers in contempt, though they should never use someone else's property without permission, but most of the fanfic I've read was so bad it made my eyes bleed. On par with the bottom third of the average slush pile.

Silly confession: When I'm having a rough time writing, I write fanfic-style indulgent crap...with my own characters.

No trouble. I'd kill before letting ANYONE see it. And it's fun as hell.

My best bud is a multi-published pro who posts fic of all sorts on one of her websites. This in addition to her pro-writing!

She writes them under a pen name to avoid copyright probs.
If any copyright holder complains she will take them down and no problem.

But a couple years back she contacted a publisher who was planning to do media tie in books on one of her favorite fandoms.

A few emails, a resume, and outline were exchanged and she got a shiny new contract to write a novel for them.

She wrote a kicka&& book even the most nitpicky fans loved.

Fic is fun, practice, and sometimes leads to bigger things. I turned one of mine into a novella that sold. (Of course, I changed names and even the gender of some characters!)

Something to consider: Lois McMaster Bujold wrote a Star Trek fic back in the day. It was about a Klingon and a human stranded on a planet and needing to trust each other to survive. That fic eventually turned into her first novel Shards of Honor. The series it sparked led to her winning LOTS of Hugo awards.

Som'fin to think about!

That's the point - all initial identifying details had to be changed. Why not just start off by inventing your own characters if you'll have to change all that before publication anyway?

To me, fanfic is intellectual theft.

I'm not putting down fanfiction or anything and I don't mind people who do it (as long as they broaden their spectrum, so to speak).

It's just. . .it's just. . .

I. . .it was. . .a. . .p. . .po. . .po. . .you can do this, Akuma. . .

It was a. . .a pokemon fanfic.

I thought I was better than that. Seriously, I think I have to turn in my badge for that kind of offense.

So while my inner 10-year-old is squealing in delight, I'm in the shower scrubbing my hands raw with soap.

I've said far too much today.

As long as you enjoyed yourself and got some writing done, I say, let your inner 10-year-old have her fun. :D

Why don't you tell us what fanfic is? Just in case, you know, one of those young writers here, for example, doesn't, ah, know what fanfic is. And also, let us them know why there are those who object to it.
Just for the sake of thoroughness, you understand...

Whoa. Okay, even I have never sunken that far... ;)

As for intellectual property-rights-stealing, here's my take:

Most of the original author/creators LOVE it when fans write their own stuff. Why? Because it promotes their product, it builds a fan base, and it keeps the excitement going. And if they don't love it, most of the time they just have to ask and it will be "taken down."

I can think of the perfect example of this: Gargoyles. This TV series was created by Greg Weisman and flew brilliantly for several seasons... and then bombed when Disney decided they could do without him. While he went on to other things, a significant fan-base remained and created its own online writing project wherein the series was continued. We're talking about 20 authors getting together online to brainstorm plots, turn out outlines, assign writers, etc.

And Greg was thrilled. He never read any of it to eliminate any legal qualms in the future, but he made himself available to answer any and all questions.

Today, and this is like a decade later, Greg is now hard at work CONTINUING his original series in comic book form. Why? Because the fan base was able to sustain itself for so long that finally Greg was able to convince someone with the power to help him that the project could work.

So in that case, it was the fans themselves that enabled the series to survive. Personally I am thrilled, and I'm proud that I can say my teenage self got a significant education in the writing/editing process by participating in such an effort.

Pencils, fanfic is short for fan-fiction. Basically, it's writing a story using someone else's characters. People often write fanfic about popular television shows, movies, or books. Fanfic usually involves those characters doing things that would not or could not happen in the actual "canon." For instance, if I were writing a fanfic about... ummmmmmmmm... okay, let's say the TV show Lost, since that is pretty popular. I might write about how Jack and Kate finally get together, find a way off the island, and get married. It is highly unlikely that the writers of the show would indulge in this sort of thing... but I might enjoy exploring the relationship between these two characters in a way that they couldn't. And other people might enjoy reading about it.

Objections to fanfic: Some people say it infringes on intellectual property rights. You are, after all, using someone else's characters. Many fanfic authors begin their stories by stating who the characters belong to and say something to the effect of "This is just for fun, so please don't sue me." Another objection to fanfic is that the quality is usually VERY low. This is because it's not published... people post their unedited works online for everyone to see. This could include the ten-year-old down the street trying to write a Pokemon story for the first time. Obviously it's not going to be fantastic.

But it's still fun. If you're curious, visit www.fanfiction.net.
