I think one of the best tools out there to find which agent represents what you write is http://www.agentquery.com

And once you have a list of agents who rep romance, go see whether there are any red flags you should be aware of by checking Preditors & Editors and our own Beware and Background Check forum.

Finally, if you don't subscribe to Publishers Marketplace, you should consider it. Expensive at $20/month -- but that gives you the ability to check daily (hourly) who's selling what to whom, and for how much. Granted, some agents don't report their deals to PM. (For example, mine doesn't. But he's been in the business for more than 20 years and has the sales and rep to prove it, so there you go.) But most agents who got their start within the past 10 years seem to be very diligent about reporting their sales to PM. Excellent resource. I highly recommend it.

What dragonjax said. :) Also, you might consider joining Romance Writers of America. It's $75 per year, but you have access to a BUNCH of information---including a list of romance agents that are actual SELLING agents in the romance field. The list is updated every couple of months with comings and goings and subgenres represented. There are a LOT of romance agents (including a few agencies that don't openly state they rep the genre.) Since it's always changing as to who is open for query and who isn't, making up a list for this site would require a lot of maintenance (which I don't have a lot of time for right now,) where publishers don't change very often.

But Agentquery will give you a good start, and you can always check in on our Bewares and Backgrounds check, plus Preditors and Editors to find out more about the agency. Or, if you have one in particular in mind, you can always ask here. The regulars in the Romance room know a lot of people.

Yep, this is what I did (the first part). I went to passionatepen.com and got a list and am going from there. I was just wondering if there were any tried and true agents, but I guess it all depends... thanks!! :)

There are LOTS of tried and true agents! Remember that more than 250 romance novels are published every MONTH. That's a lot of authors (and corresponding agents.) I think the RWA list has about a hundred fifty or so. What's your subgenre? That will help narrow it down a bit.

Since no one will answer me, I will answer myself. The Passionate Pen website has a bunch of agencies listed- try that!

Hey, thanks Nico! :)

A lot of agents take romance? I guess I'm not sure what the question is. If you look at any agent websites (agentquery, writer's market) you'll find a LOT of listings for agents.

Historical isn't my field, so I've had to do some checking around. Sorry it's taken a bit of time. I haven't checked out the Passionate Pen list, so there could be some duplicates, but here are a few to start with that have specified "historical" in their guidelines. You'll have to look them up on the web for guidelines/submission requirements. Afraid I didn't have enough time to search for all the links:

Michelle Grajkowski
Cori Deyoe

at 3 Seas Literary

Meredith Bernstein
at Meredith Bernstein Agency

Jessica Faust
Kim Lionetti
at BookEnds, LLC

Pema Browne
at Pema Browne, Ltd.

Danielle Egan-Miller, president
Joanna MacKenzie, associate agent
at Browne & Miller Literary Associates

Maria Carvainis, president
Moira Sullivan, literary associate
at Maria Carvainis Literary Agency

Sha-Shana Crichton
at Crichton & Associates

Kevan Lyon
at Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency

Those should get you started. :)

But a lot of them are not specifically for Historical...

I'm a member of RWA. One benefit is the access to information about agents/editors/publishers and what they're looking for. I'm planning on going to national conference for the first time this year, and all the agents attending have appointments and list what they want to represent.

A really good website to get you started (Cathy C mentioned it):

http://www.passionatepen.com/agentlist.htm

Good luck!!

Also, for those of us that are too cheap for PW, I avidly follow:

http://www.karenafox.com/market_news.htm

Look up the recent sales in historical and I bet you'll find a good agent listed. I know my agent sold two recently.

Take a look at QueryTracker.net. It has a searchable list of agents. Then it goes further and adds tools to help you write the letter, and keep track of who you already queried, who rejected you, who requested a full read, etc. It will email you a reminder when it's time to follow up on a manuscript. It will show you statistics telling you how many other writers have queried a particular agent and what their results were. It will even address the envelopes for you. And its all free.
