I did MAJOR clean-up on my computer tonight. I just got this new project assignment and there's a lot involved (i.e note keeping, idea formation, etc) so I thought, "Hey, I should go spring clean my folders to get ready." And so I started and my head feels like it's going to explode and my eyes are tired. I'm so organized usually. Lots of file cabinets, good bookkeeping, but man I hate organizing my computer files.

I've got one main writing folder which is of course split into major categories like current projects, idea stage projects, client contracts, queries, clips, and so on. And then each of those is split into sub folders and sometimes even more sub folders follow. But of course when I'm in a hurry I just save things like source quotes and editor saved emails to my desktop. Then later I have to figure out where I should have saved the damn document in the first place. Ahhhhh!

AND I'm not done. I just can't take it anymore tonight.

I guess I'm lucky to live in an age where I don't have huge paper trails to keep up with. I just wish I was a rich writer who could pay someone to file this stuff for me. Of course then I'd have to work out some system where our brains were plugged together so I could still actually find stuff. I'm pretty sure this is one of these downsides I hear about when it comes to freelancing.

Okay, rant over.

It's time for some chocolate frozen yogurt -- proven to clear heads and calm the body.

I love, love, love, organizing! Every couple of months I will go through my whole computer and clear it out and find better ways to organize things.
I have a whole collection of binders (for writing related and otherwise). I use the tabbed page dividers and everything. I can't get enough.
This doesn't only apply to writing for me though. I love organizing everything in my home. It's fun :tongue
Good luck!

I am completely disorganized in my life. I just have piles of stuff. Things crammed into boxes, on shelves, in drawers, on tables, etc. No rhyme nor reason.

But my computer? I find it odd that you didn't START out organized and are just now GETTING organized. As soon as I got my computer I created a WRITING folder in which I subdivided it into FICTION and NONFICTION and then within those I have subcategories of NOVELS and SHORT STORIES and POEMS and further subdivided by genre. Then each story itself has several folders for RESEARCH, ARCHIVES, QUERY, SYNOPSIS, and so on.

Yikes, I can't even work in a room that's disorganized it makes my brain crazy. It's just my computer I have issues with. I did start out organized but there's just so much new information (research, source interviews, sent queries, new blog posts for my paid blogging job vs. posts for my own, in and out-coming money, mileage, to-do stuff, and more) I have to file stuff daily and I can barely keep up. So I stick it helter skelter onto the desktop and then I'm screwed.

The simple solution of course would be to put things where they go right away. But I just want to get on to the next task quick-like and saving stuff onto my desktop takes less time than finding the correct folder. BUT I know if I just did it right in the first place it'd save me time in the long run.

BTW I just finished cleaning up! I'm so happy.

The only things I save to my desktop are software updates and the occasional PDF file, to be deleted after installation or moved to the proper area later. I HATE cluttered desktops on computers! Normally all mine ever show is the trash can.

If I get anything that needs to be saved, I sort it and save it right then, rather than dumping it and "hoping I'll get back to it later" (because I know I won't). I have on occasion maintained a "To Be Sorted" folder in My Documents, but even that's pretty rare. At the very least I'll save something in the proper category folder (Westerns, Article Projects, Papers, and so on) and then sort it later (as in before I shut the computer down after a session).

The only things on my desktop are all the shortcuts to the games I load for my kids so they have easy access.

Not sure why I'd want to put a physical file on my desktop anyway. But I'm really old school, it's taken me years to get over the whole "My Documents" phobia (because I never really could figure out where those files went in relation to my C:/ drive). I grew up as a DOSer and still create directories on my C:/ drive.
