Hey, I'm new here *waves and bows*

Is anyone here from, and/or living, in a non-English speaking country but they write in English? And if so, how do you go about getting an agent in an English speaking country while not living in one?

Just curious b/c I live in Japan, but I write in English. I've tried the US route and have had some interest from agents (one is reading an MS right now), but I'm wondering if the UK would be easier. I'm not sure if my Japanese address is off putting (plus the mail is hell!)

Any comments or suggestions would be welcome, ne?

Arigato gozaimashita ^_~

I have a friend in Paris who has numerous published short stories in the states and is querying agents here. As long as the work is good in the language it will ultimately be published it, I don't think it really matters.

Oh, and go for email queries. Save yourself the postage.

I agree with Jamie -- try the email route. Plus, if you use a standard email service like Hotmail, they won't know where you're from.

Thanks for the responses. I asked b/c I'd read agents in the US shy away from signing those who don't live in there, while the UK is a lot more open. I don't know if this is true, does anyone else?

Some UK agents state on their websites that they won't deal with writers in other countries. Few of them accept email queries but I'm working my way through the list.

I'm from the UK but I live in Canada. Most of what I write has a UK setting so I'd like to get an agent over there and be published over there. I could be wrong, but I think many US agents and publishers tend to shy away from setting outside the US unless the writers are from the US.
