Chandler.

Gotta go with my original "mental" source file.

His description gave you an insight into the personality of the characters as well as being great set-ups to some interesting internal/external dialogue.

Stephen King has a real knack for this.

I remember the first time I saw the movie Misery based on his book.

I was astounded that Kathy Bates looked so much like what I had pictured in my head, which in turn made me think WOW, he did a great job of describing her to me from her traits to her appearance.

The guy is gifted.

For descriptions, I also like Nora Roberts, Tess Gerritsen, I used to like Cornwell until her character Scarpetta took a dive into the gloom and doom side and got kinda wierd :/

King for me, as well. Love the way he describes characters.

King is good, but Dan Simmons is my favourite. But then again, Simmons is my favourite when it comes to a lot of things!

He just has a real mastery of the art - his characters are all brilliantly realised, and his descriptions of them are excellently accentuated by their actions and dialog.
