I'm a new writer, and just edited this Swifty out of a short story: '"Oh, honey," she said with spurious sweetness...' . Does this go away with practice, or do some of you veteran writers still stumble? If anything, it provides a good laugh. Thanks for your responses.

It's easier if you reduce dialogue tags to a bare minimum, and then just use "s/he said" most of the time. Having said that, I will occasionally (and that's the operative word) through in a saidism or an adverb, but only when I think it is necessary. So far I haven't caught myself writing Swifties. But then again, I don't qualify as a veteran.

I'm from the "s/he said" school too (thanks, Stephen King), but I try to mix things up once in a while. Didn't work that time, but it gave me a good laugh.

I haven't found one of my own (yet), but I do enjoy them!
