When you imagine having a time machine (and I know you all imagine this from time to time) who do you go and see for advice?

Personally I go and seek the approval of Abraham Lincoln

Assuming the machine negates the language barriers...

I'd go to the 14th Century and spend 12 months training with Johannes Liechtenauer, the founder of my martial art.

Then I'd go to the early 13th century, buy Sir William the Marshal a drink, and sit back and listen to his stories.

I wouldn't visit anyone in the past for advice. I'd go sightseeing, is what I'd do. Get pissed with a Viking. That sort of thing.

For advice, I'd go to 14thC Norwich and knock at the window of Julian of Norwich. Or possibly Gerald of Wales, who knew everything about everything (or thought he did).
For fun, I'd like to see Eleanor of Aquitaine at her Courts of Love.

Mlshanks

I want to go visit Samuel Clemens with Rudyard Kipling.

I'd attend some of the late night drinking sessions at the early Worldcons with Robert Heinlein.

I want to drink a pint with JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis and the rest of the Inklings at the Eagle and Child Pub in Oxford.

I'd like to go back and talk with Jesus - then come forward and do lunch with Einstein and George Washington...

It'd be a busy day or two :)
Mind if I hitch a ride? You can let me off in Palestine, 'cuz I'd really like to spend the whole three years with Him. It'd give me a chance to brush up on my Aramaic, too. ;)

Wow, this is tough when you limit us to only one person. Really tough. I'd most likely chose someone no one's ever heard of, like Wellington's valet. Servants know the best gossip.

I'd have more fun if I could spend a year in the year of my choice. I'd go for 1799, then I'd have a chance to meet most of the great thinkers of the early modern period, Jefferson, B. Franklin, Hamilton and Madison, Napoleon (not known for thinking, but I hear he was fascinating), George IV, Lord Byron, the Duchess of Devonshire Georgiana Spencer, Princess Charlotte--who became the "unruly" queen, Wellington of course, Horatio Nelson, Jervis, Pitt, Wilburforce, Hannah More. One person a week for a year. That ought to do it.

I always wanted to "run" into Doc Holiday. I would ask him if he killed Ringo or not.

There are a number of people in history whose brains I wouldn't mind picking, and they're all from different time periods. In no particular order:

Thomas Jefferson, Joan of Arc, Hildegard of Bingen, Ben Franklin, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony, Machiavelli, Jane Austen, Socrates, King Richard "the Lionheart", Alexander the Great, and Elizabeth I.

Can you imagine that dinner party?

No problem. My time machine would have more than enough room! :)

I'd also like to meet Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, Teddy Roosevelt, Michelangelo (though communicating would be tough since I only know how to swear in Italian), and John Lennon.

I'd have to clear more than a week, I guess... ;)

SJones

I would want to go back and meet James Fenimore Cooper and Andrew Jackson.

Herself, her husband, and two friends went to Vinland to get rich gathering wood or whatever it was. I'll have to look it up. They were supposed to split it 50/50.

Well the sister then kicked the friends out claiming that it's her brother's cottages and that she is in charge. So the other two people had to go aways and build their own house. Then later on when she was visiting them noticed how well they were doing. She got back to her own claim and told her husband that the two men raped her. I don't think her husband believed her because they were all best friends. It took some convincing so he finally through her nagging and pestering killed them in revenge. They took all the stuff they were there to get along with the stuff their partners got and went back home. When the people asked what happened to the other guys she told them that they didn't want to leave or they got killed by skraelings or something. They knew how she was and didn't really believe her and so she kinda became a pariah within the town even though she is Lief's sister.

When I get time I'll look up the story in my book. Just getting ready for work now and don't have time.
