I have a riddle in my ms and it's about five or six lines long. As of right now, since my mc is reading the riddle out loud, I have it like this: double quote, single quote, riddle, riddle, riddle, close single and double quote.

When I look at it, it doesn't stand out. It just looks like another piece of prose. Should I not single quote it and maybe underline it (italics) instead to bring emphasis to it?

This is for submission by the way.

Have you tried indenting it?

The character picks up the riddle, looks at the paper, and beings to read:

There once was a woman from Venus

Whose body was shaped like a---

You get the idea. I've seen this used on books, where a block of text needed to be set apart from the rest of the prose.

Uh, minus the double spacing. Silly AW....

Take a look at Tolkien's The Hobbit. There is a chapter called Riddles in the Dark. I believe he indents the riddles. My memory is bad, so I may be wrong, lol.
