...a good vampire book? Let me clarify: By "good" vampire book, I mean one that doesn't feature a morose, agsty, depressed, ultra mysterious, vampire male (who, incidentally, has the face and body of a Greek God), that is somehow "saved" by the super-hot-but-doesn't-know-she's-hot girl who figures out his secret but doesn't care what he is?

Is anyone writing about vampires that, well, like being vampires?

It's been years since I read it, but wasn't one of Stephen King's books, Salem's Lot, about a vampire? I remember I really enjoyed it. (Just ignore this response if I'm way off base on this.)

But anyhoo...my favourite vampire books are Freda Warrington's A Taste of Blood Wine, A Dance in Blood Velvet and The Dark Blood of Poppies. I think they're out of print (at least in this country) but you might be able to pick them up on eBay.

Vampire

I don't know whether they're still in print, of even if he's still writing, but Jon F. Merz wrote some vampire books, the Lawson series, with a very different take on the vampire theme.

Yup. The Fixer, The Invoker, The Destructor, and The Syndicate. I have all 4.

Very different take on the vampire theme. Of the four, The Syndicate is the only one that is still in print. I had to buy the others at secondhand bookstores and ebay. I think I saw something a while ago where Merz is working on a 9 book/dvd project for kids involving martial arts.

Midnight Mass by F Paul Wilson

The Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris--Club Dead, Dead by Dawn, etc. Urban Fantasy, really, because it has vamps, werewolves, faeries, you name it, but the first 3 or 4 are different and fun. They're getting a little out-there for my tastes now.

I was a Merz follower, but everything I can find on the web about him is now many months old.

I think it was on Publisher's Marketplace. Possibly on Bob Diforio's section somewhere. Don't hold me to that, though. It could have been an old entry, I really don't remember.

Christopher Moore wrote two humorous vampire books: Blood Sucking Fiends and You Suck. The vampires like being vampires and the books are a lot of fun to read. Set in modern day San Francisco.

I saw You Suck on the shelf at B&N and almost grabbed it. I was on a limited budget though and went with I Am Legend. I'll have to pick up You Suck later, as it sounds interesting.

Kindred by (the late) Octavia Butler was an interesting take on vampires. When I finished reading it, I was sad because it was such a unique world and I was sorry that there wouldn't be any more books written there.

How on earth will they get out of the shadow of the Vincent Price version?! (Titled, I believe, The Last Man on Earth.) And why are they even trying to make it again?

The horrendous remake of Psycho comes to mind. I made it through all of 4.5 mintes of that one.
