Here are some of my favorites: Wang Wei Du Fu (whoo!), Sylvia Plath, Billy Collins, William Carlos Williams, Ted Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, Gwendolyn Brooks, Maya Angelou, William Shakespeare, William Blake, John Ashbery, W.S. Merwin, etc.

There are also oodles of online poetry magazines/web zines. Some of them are pretty good.

Pick up a copy of Garrison Keilor's "Good Poems".

Look at any poetry anthology. Someone has judged those poems to be good.

My favorite is Robert Frost.

What kind of poems do you like? Do you like any old school classics? Do you like romantic, abstract, rhyming, free verse?

Good Reads

Right now, I'm in the middle of Ted Koosers,"The Poetry Home Repair Manual," it's not a collection, but it has really turned me onto Kooser himself, So I recomend him, Billy Collins, and Charles Bukowski ( he's pretty raw & rough as far as the lifestyle he led, I don't know what your into. ) There's also a great book of contemporary poets called, 180 More: extrodinary poems for everyday reading by: Billy Collins. I hope this helps.

Has selections from nearly every well known poet there is--even some reading their works. Great site for getting to know a variety of styles and poets.

Great to browse on a slow day at work.

i think, tattered, that you might like allen ginsberg. pick up howl and other poems. it's powerful. a supermarket in california and america are two poems that are astoundingly real, yet beautiful. you would do well to pick up that book.

plath i think you might like too, you both share dark, almost morbid themes.

dylan thomas is one of my favourite poets. astounding metaphores.

also, one poem i'd like to recommend (the poet i'm not entirely fond of), but this poem is wonderful. eavan boland - this moment
