Wednesday night my mom sent me an email about a dog that needed rescuing. Mom rescues, raises and breeds Akbash dogs. For those of you who possibly have never heard of the breed, they are guardian livestock dogs originally bred in Turkey and are a cross between the Great Pyrenees and the Bullmastiff.

Maggie is a three year old female weighing 110 pounds.

Maggie doen't have the instinst to guard goats for the two years the previous owners had her. Then a neighbor dog came over and the two of the packed up against the goats. Okay, fine, I understand the man's dismay and anger towards Maggie, but he decided he was going to shoot her.

That night I filled out an application to rescue Maggie and Thursday the application was approved, basically because they know my mom. Friday, I called the owners and picked Maggie up.

I had to walk her into the house by her front legs, where she wouldn't budge after I got her into the house. I had to drag/walk the poor dog out to the backyard. She thinks putting a leash on her is punishment. She didn't know what a food bowl were, much less a crate as her house. Niether did she know what a toy was. I stopped at PetSmart before I picked her up and had gotten the crate, leash, dog bowls on a stand since she's a big dog, milk bones, pigs ears, a plush toy, food, scooper and a pad for the crate to the amount of $495.

I know she was tramitized being with a new owner and a new house as well as missing the other dogs and cats that lived with her. When she heard me come out the back door she'd run to me and stop short 6 feet away from me. I showed her her food and water bowls, nothing. I had to take them to her to get her to eat. Most of the first two days the poor thing was cowling and hung head. If I start to head back into the house, she walks away hung head and looking dejected! Loving attention was also unknown to her.

I would go out and spend time with her loving up on her and giving her kissy sounds. I finally got a kiss. Sunday, I went out on one of my visits and looked around the yard for digging spots and found none. I went to turn around and almost stepped on her.

The next thing I see, she's crumpled to the ground. Scared the hell out of me, then she flipped onto her back, offering me her throat and underbelly. I laid down next to her and spent an hour loving up on her. I put my face into her throat while making the kissy sound. She lifted her shoulders and head off the ground offering her full neck to me. I continued moving across her neck and back making the kissy sound, then she buried her face into my chest. She's so gentle and craving love it is pathetic. She let me look at her ears, mouth and paws without any problems. I rubbed her belly, neck, rubbed her face from nose to ears and took my nails and combed her hair on her side and back, while telling her she's a good girl and she's my baby.

Later, while I was fixing dinner, I opened the back door where she stood about 5 feet away whining and wagging her tail. I think she wanted in but still wouldn't come when I tried to coax her in.

Monday, afternoon, I did the same thing. I also discoved if I sit down on a chair, she'll come right to me.

Later that evening, I heard her bark for the first time and when out to see why. I found her full of life and at full attention because a neighbor was making clanging noises. I praised her for being a good girl, while she wagged her tail looking at me then to where the sound was coming from. I treated her with a milk bone.

Before I went to bed, I made one more trip out to say goodnight to her. She came straight to me wagging her tail and when I stopped loving up on her, she nudged me for more. When I was about to go in, she walked away and laid down by her plush toy she had pulled out of the crate earlier in the afternoon. Then she jumped up and walked over to the spot where we lay together, looked at me wagging her tail, inviting me to lay down with her!

I have a lot of re-training ahead of me and little by little she's beginning to come around. I noticed this morning her sad eyes were not as sad and are starting to come around to normal.

Mr. Lucky, my cat, is spooked, but taking it well because I make sure he is not neglected and loved up on before I go see Maggie and after I come back in the house. So's he's getting twice the loving now...not that he's objecting mind you!! But he still won't meet her...yet!

Here's Miss Maggie:

That is a cute story. I feel sorry for Maggie before coming to be part of your family. She is lucky now.
I have 3 babies: a yellow lab, a chi-peke (funniest thing I ever saw!) and a pomeranian. They don't know they are dogs. So, shhh! Don't tell them. They all come in the house when they want, and go out on nice days. The lab will sit whoever is holding her leash, no matter who it is, just waiting for it to go around her neck. The chi-peke just hangs back and waits for us all to go outside, so he can jump on the bar looking for leftover dinner. And the pomeranian is usually perched in her spot on the back of the couch watching all of us.

She is so beautiful!

(And so are you!)
She is beautiful, and I agree so are you. You are doing all the right things. Given time, you will have a dog that will die for you. As you would for her. I have all rescued dogs. I know what you are dealing with, and you have gone above and beyond anything I've ever heard of to make her welcome. I wish all my neighbors were like you. I wish I could do what you are doing with all the strays I deal with. But God Bless you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to meet her, but she will never need to meet me. she has you.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. I just couldn't let the SOB, shoot her, especially after seeing her sad eyes!!!

I think she's coming around faster than I had expected, considering this is only day 4 at a new home and owner, however, we still have a lot of work learning the leash and I'm letting her learn about her house and not try and put her in there when she would think it's punishment.

I used to teach dog obedience which will come down the road later...but something tells me with the love and trust she's learning, I won't have to much work getting her to mind.

I'll keep you posted with pics! :D

Congrats on your new companion.

I have a Great Pyranees dog, and the it's unbelievable that your dog doesn't bark, as GPD's bark for a living.

We got our dog as a puppy and he's about 5 now. Great Pyranees is not an easy breed, and there' s no way we'd adopt another one. We live in the country on five acres, but he has to be kenneled, because he will go stand in the road, which will get him killed in due time.

Our dog is very good natured, and while we kept him inside at night for the first 3 years of his life when we lived in town - and he never had a single potty accident, he's much better outside than inside. However, we had a 6 foot privacy fence that he used to climb over effortlessly. We tried everything from shock collars that he laughed at to invisible fences that he ignored, and still couldn't contain him. He ended up being tied up during the day and coming inside at night. Now, he's in a kennel, but gets a daily 2 mile walk, and always has.

I hope your dog doesn't start climbing over your fence. It's a major hassle wihen they do that, and from I understand, it's a breed thing.

Aww.. she's sweet. And thank you for rescuing her.

(She won't eat cats, will she? I have trouble with animals that have bigger teeth than I do)

Maggie had other dogs and cats where she used to live and never hurt them. Also the previous owners had 10 grandchildren who romped all over her and she never showed her teeth or snarled, they say.

Mr. Lucky, peeked around the couch at her twice, but she just laid there and looked at him. He's spooked and not sure of her being the top pet on the totum pole for the last nine years!!! But, I love up on him before I go see Maggie and after I come back into the house, so he's not complaining to hard.

Maggie's barked twice now at the neighbors making loud clanking noise.

The Akbash love to dig...but so far nothing and the first two nights I got up several times to make sure she was still in the yard!!! So far, she's happy where she is.

Deborah,
Maggie looks like she is happy with her new home. You are wonderful for rescuing her. :)

It sounds like Maggie has some of the typical temperament of of a guardian dog: calm, alert, reserved, loyal, suspicious towards strangers. She's going to be a great companion.

She looks totally relaxed in the new photos. Living with Labradors, I know all about moon craters in the backyard. Let me know if she develops a digging issue. I've got some great solutions.

Maggie is a lucky dog!

I wish someone would take in the dog that's running loose in the new development where we're building our house. It's a female black lab, about 6-months old, with the typical lab love for people.

One of the carpenters said she belongs to a Mexican construction worker, but he apparently abandoned her a few weeks ago. Now she goes from house to house and gets a few scraps of food, but she's losing weight. I fed her today, but since I only go there once a week, she's not going to stay healthy very long. I keep hoping one of the families moving in will take pity on her and give her a home.

We don't have a front door on our house yet, so she sleeps in the loft, and when the workers show up, she greets them like she's the dog of the house.

The local animal control will put her down if she is turned in, so we don't want to do that. I already have one dog too many for the developer's rules, but she's 14 years old, so he's not going to enforce it. Unfortunately, that wouldn't apply to another young dog.

I don't know how anyone could abandon a sweet dog like that.

Day 5 with Maggie:

You would not believe how protective she has become in the last 3 days!

I heard her barking and before I went out the back door, I noticed she was looking into the pool and moving her head. She was barking at Rover, the polaris pool clearner!

Later, she began barking again...I went out. Maggie heard the kids next door and was wagging her tail. Bailey, the 5 yr old. was on top of her fort and looking over the fence. When Maggie saw me she ran for me and walked out by the pool. I introduced Bailey to Maggie. Suddenly Maggie began to growl low. I petted her and told her it was okay. She did it 3 times then stopped when Bailey got down.

The funny thing is, I really don't like Bailey, she's sullen and just stares. But I tried not to show it by the tone of my voice for Maggie's sake, however she may have picked up I didn't like the child or she didn't like the child either.

Tonight as I was getting dinner, I looked up and saw Maggie trotting around the yard with her tail wagging, which is what a normal happy dog would do, instead of her hung head and slow walk she had when she first came home with me!!

And...when I stop loving up on her, she'll nudge me for more!

There's been so much improvement on her part in the last 3 days, it's incredible.

Day 6 1/2 & 7 With Maggie:

Last night the temperature dipped to the 40's and I had a rug for Maggie to sleep on. Did she? No. She slept on the grass outside my bedroom window. At 5:30 AM, I woke to her whining.

I got up and laid down in the grass with her, giving her company. I remembered an old comforter and went to get it. I folded in half and laid down on it and put pieces of a milk bone in my mouth for her to take. She crawled sideways on to the comforter and took the milk bones but would not lie fully on it.

When I got up I put her dog toy on it and went to my bedroom and opened the binds in time to see the toy in her mouth and her drop it on the grass. Okay, she doesn't know it's her's and therefore the toy doesn't belong there also.

I got back home after running errands. One of my stops was at Petsmart for some things for her, my cat and two birds. I took the smoked beef knuckle out, hiding it with my body and sat on the stone at my spa. I rubbed my hand on the knuckle and let her smell it and she licked the flavoring off. I did this three times then gave her the knuckle which she took to the grass to eat.

It was then I noticed the comforter had been moved AND the toy was on the comforter!!! Hmm, maybe she's realized it helps keep her warm?
