Yes, my characters have woken me up out of a dead sleep because there was something they had to say that just couldn't wait until morning.

You know that jerky-awake thing you do; you have the falling sensation and then ARGH! Awake?

If I have a character's motivation pootling around at the back of my mind, somewhere on the border of awake/asleep, I get it and jerk awake and think, "Ah, so THAT'S what you want!"

I spend the entire day trying to keep my Muse in line and then she'll do something that's just totally something she would do.
Like barge into the bathroom while I'm taking a shower to ask for a glass of water. Or wake me up in the middle of the night to tell me she wet her bed.

Really, the things I do for her. . .

That's why a notepad lives by the bed!

Ignoring them just makes them noisier... (kids or characters, either one!)

Nope. I think of ideas for my characters in the middle of the night but I don't hear (or pay attention to) the characters themselves when I am not writing.

Double agreement here.

I've never had this issue. Perhaps my characters are more dead than alive. Perhaps I should consider writing Zombie Paranormal Romance (as opposed to Zombie Romance, which is just creepifying).

Nice title to your post. Here I am thinking we were in for some controversy, and it's just a question about hearing characters.

Might as well answer: I do hear my characters. I've been pretty much living my book for a year, so that's understandable, right?

Mine tend to want my attention when I'm driving or taking a shower. :D

Just for fun, once, to entertain my critique group, I wrote a short story in which all of our characters came out to fuss at us about how they were being written. It was interesting to play with the characters that way, and it helped me understand a couple of mine really well.

Sometimes my female characters start grabbing my ding dong.

I say things like "stop that!" I don't really mean it though and they know that so they just ignore my pleas.

Oh yeah, especially one in particular - problem is, he knows he's so bloody cute that I can't get mad at him, so he totally takes advantage of it.

I can't say my characters talk to me. They're completely unaware of my existence.

Nope, can't say that they have. They know I'll hurt them. :-D

I agree. You have to keep them locked up somewhere and not let them talk...espcecially when I'm not there to hear what they are saying...
