First Hummingbird of '07!

I saw my first hummingbird today! I've been telling myself for the last couple of weeks to go ahead and clean the feeders, make the food, all that good stuff, but kept putting it off. Silly me! You should have seen me--I nearly broke my neck getting in the house to mix up some sugar water and get the feeder filled up. I love hummingbirds.

Careful, your parrots are going to be jealous.

Hummingbirds are cool. I never saw them until I moved to California. I haven't noticed any around here yet, but the all black squirrels are out in force.

Oh, I've been watching for them, but haven't seen one yet. Usually here they arrive the second week of April, but I'm never ready, and like you, rush to get the nectar made, before the little jewels break my door down!

Anne, I hope you see some hummingbirds today to help celebrate your birthday!

I usually get a few hummingbirds buzzing around every year because I have lots of flowering plants, but I need to encourage more to come around. I should put some hummingbird feeders out this year. I haven't seen one this year--yet.

It's been so warm here in Georgia in recent weeks that I put a feeder out a week ago, but I haven't seen one this year yet. Last summer was the first time I put out a feeder on the front porch, and it attracted a huge number of hummingbirds. I'd never seen them up close before. I spent hours out there just sitting (okay, and drinking coffee) while they came and went. A few have hovered a foot or two in front of my face, apparently wondering what I was. Their ability to fly and hover is amazing.

I noticed that one bird seems to "own" the feeder, and sits in a tree (it's easier to find the perch if you watch them as the fly away and land on it) or the phone wire about fifty feet away. When another approaches, I look over at the "owner's" perch and sure enough here he comes to chase away the "visitor."

This is quite interesting, because I just cleaned and filled my hummingbird feeder last weekend, and saw two hummingbirds today. (Not eating from the feeder, but on bushes and flowering trees in our yard.)

And I had this discussion with a woman in a nursing home this morning. She has a hummingbird feeder outside her window and hasn't seen a hummingbird yet, but two nurses claimed to have seen them.

(I'm a nursing student.)

So they are out in Mississippi!

I'm in north Alabama, close to the Tennessee state line. From what I understand, some of south Alabama has hummingbirds all year 'round!

Maybe some will show up for you before August!

Hummingbirds are so funny. They're not shy at all and some are downright bold! Ours are very nosy and will zoom over to check out the telephone, a bright design on a shirt, or sometimes just to look us right in the eye. And when it rains--oh, boy, they go crazy! They love to zip around in the rain and aren't even scared by thunderstorms.

We're blessed to have a bunch of them around here all spring and summer, and sometimes late into the fall. I saw the last one in early November!

I'm in South Mississippi - right by you, Anne. We have loads of them here, too.

On a similiar note : today I was hit in the eye by a huge bumblebee - you know - those huge ones? He apparently wasn't watching where he was going and slammed right into my eye - then flew off.

He didn't sting me, thank goodness.

And a deer ran out of in front of me this morning, about 6 AM. Good to know there are still some alive after hunting season.

AND - my husband already saw a snake last week. So watch for them.

I'm jealous awatkins!

Every Spring I look forward to seeing my first Hummingbird. Like you, I had been contemplating putting my feeder out but kept putting it off. I figure the delay was a good thing tho because Mother Nature pulled a fast one with sudden temperature changes.

Hi, Gehenna! Yup, we had a sudden about-face in temps, too. It got into the 20s last weekend and I worried about the hummingbirds. Those little things must be super tough, because they were out bright and early in the sub-freezing temps Sunday morning!

Pam, you'll have to start wearing goggles to protect your eyes from bumblebees.
