In case you haven't noticed, I've gone postal.

As of May 14, 2007, the postage will be increased to 41 cents. I couldn't find a thread on this so I thought I'd post a new one.

But, as far as I can tell, the 41 cent stamp is not available yet, so I guess the only thing to do is to start getting those 2 cent stamps for your SASE.

But, what if you have already sent your submissions out and the target agency says it will take them several months to reply? If they don't get around to your query until after May 14, are they going to pony up the dough to send you a nice no thank you, or will you never hear from them again?

The good news is that right now, each additional ounce cost an extra 24 cents. But once the postage is raised (in May), each additional ounce will cost 17 cents.

You can also buy a 41 cent forever stamp.

The post office has no F%$#ing ideal how badly this makes writers with SASEs stress! Seriously. I'm not in the SASE market right now, but I was during the last hike and I actually called . . . Ethan Ellenberg, I believe, to ask his secretary if I needed to send a two cent stamp.:)

She told me that they would be covering it for a couple of weeks, but thanks for asking.

Hehe, I laughed really hard at myself later.:)

I wish they'd just raise the price of stamps to fifty cents and leave them the heck alone for a few years.

I ditto James' idea. I don't mind paying a bit extra for a letter, but when they mess with it like that, it really drives me crazy. Thank goodness a number of agents and editors have been making switches to email.

They have these lovely new stamps (I'm sure you can find them on the PO website) that are simply First Class stamps, and will be usable no matter how many times the rate goes up.

This is one reason why e-subs make me increasingly happy as time goes by.

Cheering you all on!

Kind of inconvenient for this price hike, though, since they don't come out until the new rate starts. For the next one, they'll be useful.

I've been pasting an extra two cents of postage on my recent SASEs, but there's nothing I can do about the ones that were sent out before this price hike was announced.

*sigh*

Every time they raise the postal rates, writers with SASEs somewhere in the slush stress out.

Every time, what happens is the agents or editors put on their own additional postage. They know that when you sent the submission the rates were different.

Go back to writing. This isn't a problem.

They'll raise the price to fifty cents, all right. But then the following year, they'll raise it again anyway.
