My question is this: When submitting a prospective story would you include the 'Introduction' as part of the requested 'first three chapters' or '50 pages' (etc.) requested by an Agent/Publisher?

My reason is this: I have a rather lengthy introduction by both the Author (me) and the MC (fictional character). This introduction is, I feel, important to establish a specific 'attitude' that I wish to convey for the storyline. However, my story can stand alone without the introduction. I would like to keep the introduction in the final printing job, but for submission purposes, I don't feel like this is a strong point to begin with. My first three chapters (prelude, Ch1, Ch2) carry a moving and interesting 'hook' (so I hope). So when asked, should I not submit the Intro until I've gain interest with the Prelude, Ch1 & Ch2? (Then adding the intro after having gained the Agent/Publisher interest?)

Do chapter 1, 2, 3. The introduction can go with the rest of the manuscript, later.

They want to see that you can write and tell a story, not introduce yourself and your story. :)

We peons are greatly appreciative!

The intro is more about 'opinion' than me - the author. I hope it starts a 'tone' that the story follows. But I get your meaning, Thanks PeeDee.

Um. Like, are you talking Introduction, or Prologue?

Or maybe Foreword?

Or do you have any first idea what I'm talking about...?

Doesn't matter, really. The only thing I'd see making a case for would be a Prologue, and even then, a quick search of AW will give you threads where we've analyzed whether or not to send those, and the agreement was generally "no."

...cause sometimes you just need a slap on the hea
Actually, since you've already admitted that the story can stand alone without it, leave it out. I had a habit of wanting to do that as well, explaining a backstory, or setting something up for the reader. It was a strange revelation to me because I hate reading prologues and the like, yet it was something I constantly wanted to do for my own stories. What I've learned is: it's not necessary. Just about any writer here will tell-- and has already told, in fact-- you: begin where your story begins.

If it's important enough, it will come out as you tell your story.
