New Millennium no longer accepting unsolicited story submissions

I submitted a story to New Millennium and they told me they no longer accept unsolicited story submissions. If you want to have a chance at publication in their magazine, you have to enter their contest. The entry fee is something like $17 which I'm not springing for.

Personally, I think chumps enter story contests. Unless they win.

It seems like they should make this more clear on their website.

Do you mean this New Millennium?

I've not come across them before, so I can't really comment on the validity or otherwise of this lot. I'd be a bit reluctant to call everyone who entered contests chumps - we run one or two here on the site. :)

With paid submission contests, though, I agree you need to be careful.

Hopefully someone will have something to say about the publication. Anyone got any experience with New Millennium?

The bit where they only take submissions to their contest, which costs money to enter, is not necessarily an instant red flag, but would still insure that I don't submit to them at all.

Otherwise, I know little or nothing about them. I've seen them before, but there was nothing there that caught my eye or held my attention.

I think they made it pretty clear on their website that they are accepting submissions for this story contest.

I havent seen anywhere else on that site which states that they accept unsolicited stories from authors. As a short story writer, the best thing to do before sending away your story is to research that magazine, if their website doesnt say anything about allowing general subbmissions, then the bet is they dont want them. On the other hand, to make sure, before sending a story, give the mag a call, most I have spoken to are willing to answer a few questions on the phone.

Personally, I think chumps enter story contests. Unless they win.

Well that is your opinion, and if that is all you can come up with, then best to keep it to yourself. On the other hand if you would like to start a discussion on short story contests in a new thread, without personally insulting anyone, I am sure it would prove to be an interesting topic.

I don't pay to submit material.

I do enter story contests, though. And I have won a few...and not won a couple.

But all submission guidelines should always be clear. I never hesitate to contact a publication in which I am interested if I think their guidelines are unclear.
