Well.... it has not really filled any holes, but it is entertaining. The hole filler was the one about Hadley... and I already read that before.
I am 82% of the way done, according to Kindle! On the last story, Gift Wrap.
Your Postal Carrier must be drawn and quartered!!!

Heh-heh...kidding! You're right though. He is a draw in and of himself. But she can't marry him...not that he's asked her. (I love that tag line that Charlaine always adds whenever Sookie thinks about marriage.)
Alcide ain't so bad neither.

I agree. I think the actor who plays Alcide needs to be very Hugh Jackmanesque... and I've long imagined Quinn as The Rock. Swoon.

“No, there’s just as much weird stuff out there, and we’re going to meet some werewolves for the first time; we’re going to find out some roles vampires played in history, which is interesting and shocking and funny. It’s more of the same.”
Anyone hear about the Anita Blake TV series in the works for "IFC" (what the hell is IFC anyway?) Who will play Jean-Claude. That's all I want to know.
I posted this in the book forum and forgot to include here....

...we’ve already cast a major role: the vampire king of Mississippi, who’s going to be played by Dennis O’Hare, which I’m very, very excited about.” O’Hare’s a Tony-, Obie- and Drama Desk Award-winning actor best known to television audiences for his recurring role as Travis March on Brothers & Sisters.
Who in the heck is Dennis O'Hare? I need to iMDB him... I also can't remember much about the King of Mississippi from the books but I'm sure it'll come to me or someone can give me the Reader's Digest version. :)

I ordered my Kindle last week... SHHHHHH it is a secret here! I have friends with both... the Kindle they say is easier because you can just download from ANYWHERE, whereas the Sony, you must buy from your computer then tranfer via usb cord or something. I actually downloaded the Barnes and Noble reader (a free application) onto my computer and bought a book I could not find in stores or Libraries. So, it is an ereader too! But, not as compact. So, if you want to see how you will like it, you might want to do that free thing first!!!
I finally took the plunge and bought my Kindle (ouch! it cost a pretty penny but was well worth the cost). I absolutely love it!!! And I have to give my poor eyes a break (starting to see stars). I've been reading the first 3 books in the series over the past 3 days. I'm so addicted! I was hoping that I could pace myself to read the series over the next ump months so that I had plenty of TrueBlood to keep me going until the next season. Don't think that's going to happen.

Yes, I paid the $299 for it, last month. Go figure. I would buy the Kindle only a month before the newer version comes out at a cheaper price. Thanks for the heads up on getting a refund from Amazon. I'll do that, as it'll buy me the rest of the Sookie series. I'll probably finish book 4 tonight (this TrueBlood addiction can't be too great for my social life :0)).

Ok, I remember Bill saying that Sookie would be connected to Eric (vampire) because she drank his blood. If that is the case, why is it you are not called to, connected to, controlled by, known by, the vampire whose 'V' vampire blood you are drinking.
Now, I did not read the books, so if someone else knows the answer to this I would greatly appreciate it. It was something that bugged me.

Hhhmm, good point. I don't recall them addressing that in the books - at all. I'll bet they explain it by saying "V" on the streets is mixed or "older" blood and that the control thing only works when it's straight from the vein... (????)

Well, in the books, I think it's because the drainers usually kill the vamps they've taken blood from.
On the show, I think it might be that that connection is still there, which is why the queen is okay with it. She's able to control humans without them being aware of the connection.
It's a theory anyway. :)

I thought the books said that as the vampire blood ages, it changes in its effects on humans and as it gets older, becomes more and more volatile. So drinking it fresh from a vamp would result in a different experience than drinking it from a vial when it's aged at least somewhat.

Not having read the books, I can only comment on the episodes of the show. Given that, I really have zero problems with any of the casting. Methinks Sookie is a believable, likable person who is young and stubborn but kind and judgmental. Anna Paquin (who has done a very good job with every role I've ever seen her in) does a fine job of portraying her in the series.
Erik is an interesting character. So is Bill. I must admit my favorite characters are Jessica and her human boyfriend--and I understand the former is entirely original to the series.

Yeah, they did a great job w/the casting even though they strayed from the books (Tara being one obvious). I think Jason is perfectly cast, along with Bill/Eric/Pam/Lafayette and Sookie---as was Sookie's Grandmother.

Eric will also find himself in a new romance, with Yvetta, a Czech dancer at Fangtasia. Natasha Alam, an actress from Uzbekistan who has appeared on several episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful, will be the much-envied woman sharing intimate moments with Alexander Skarsgard.

Back on subj, I can't stand the modern take on vampires, usually, and serial-killers give me the yawn big-time, so I was ignoring it until I read a great review of it and decided to give it a go. By the way, has anyone read the most recent book in the series?

I just read it today, and I wasn't too thrilled. Not enough Eric, and not really much in the way of moving the plot along. I feel like the last two books in that series were just fillers, since not too much happened. Maybe the series jumped the shark, I don't know, but I'll stick with it because I hope it resolves the way I imagine it should.

I agree re: the last book... At some point, the series needs to end. I just hope it ends like I want it to! I also feel Hamilton's Anita Blake series has run its course. ;)

I just ordered HBO... they offered it for 3 months free... so sweet of them!!! I read the latest book... was a bit disappointed... Spoiler alert for those who have not read the 2nd to last one!
I was hoping that Claudine would come back as an angel since that is what she was hoping for. Maybe in the next one...

I too just ordered HBO for this series, but they didn't give me such a deal :( They gave me one free month of HBO in demand. Big freaking wow. A whole five dollars they saved me. But, alas. I'll take it. 5 bucks is 5 bucks, right. And it allows me to watch the episodes anytime after they air. I like being able to have a back up if I miss it for any reason. Going to cancel HBO as soon as the series is over. Cable here is so damn expensive.

Any thoughts? Questions? Comments?
Remarks on what an absolutely fantastic backside Eric has???
:D
I thought it was okay. I don't know what's up with the Ukranian dancer, she seems kind of extraneous to me, especially given the number of new characters we're in for this season.
And what was up with Sam's dream about Bill???

And what was up with Sam's dream about Bill???
I am hoping it was because he had SOOOOO much of Bill's blood he cannot help the dreams... like Sook's dreams of Eric now!! I won't complain about those... cuz I love him sooooooooooooooooo
Had to wait until this morning to watch it as my kids were in my bed because of the super lightening and thunder storm....

Eric has a gorgeous backside---the rest of him is hot too! :D
I agree about the Ukrainian dancer---WTFO? Seemed like filler to me. Unless she turns out to be something "else" like that waitress from 2nd season who was a shifter. And Sam's dream about Bill... way weird. I know they're now connected due to blood exchange but I can't figure that one out. Jessica was hilarious--as usual. And Tara is going off the deep end, setting her up to start dating vamps. :)

Eric is the shit. Gah,I love that creature. He was naked, bless tptb. They are thinking about the Eric stans. Am I the only one who fanned herself when Eric was talking about primal sex?
Jessica is hilarious. Um,is Sam coming out? That scene with Bill was hot.
Poor Tara. She's cuckoo for cocoa puffs. Lafayette is awesome and my personal she-ro,Alfre Woodard, as his mom was a great scene! I love her.
King Russell and his boyfriend look like they are going to be delicious fun. I'm wondering what happened to the dude in the crawlspace. Is he a zombie now? Sookie imitating the way Bill says her name was funny.
When I saw Franklin Mott, all I could think of was that Cromwell is a vampire!

But I'm in New Zealand, so I have to wait :-(
Lafayette is brilliant. He's the first queer character I've seen on television that has such a strong "deal with me, bitch" kind of attitude. I love when he hits that guy up about the AIDS burgers. Priceless.

I'm enjoying season three so far.
Methinks Lorena will probably survive, no better luck. But maybe Tara has found someone who'll genuinely help her live again. Any bets the Queen is gonna be forced into a royal marriage? Or that Jason has met a werewolf girl? Meanwhile, my bet is that Pam disposed of Jessica's problem.

Alcide--love the actor they picked to portray him (just as I imagined him). I also love that they're following the book more closely this season (so far). :) :)

Wow, tonight's episode totally rocked. My favorite of the season so far. Lovin' Franicis. He's so psycho and gave me a lot of good laughs. Lot's revealed today, but I'm still waiting to see what the deal is with Tommy (is that his name? Sam's brother?) and his father. Something weird going on there (Obviously, I haven't read the books, but I also know it's possible that this story is actually part of them).

Ok, so Alcide and Sookie's acting left a bit to be desired...
I really am thinking that Tommy was being sexually abused by his father... the comment of Tommy being his 'head to tail'... but that would go along with the shifter thing too...
Oh, and in the books Sam is not adopted... thus non of that is going on. Only first born is a shifter so his siblings are not. Mom is remarried in the books... don't remember what happened to his dad. But it was not this dysfunctional mess.
Eric... nuff said!

Anyways, to catch up with everybody:
I despise Lorena, too.
LOVE Eric!!!
What's up with Sookie being able to do that light thing again, but on a Were?
I'm holding off judgment on the Lafayette romance situation. Not sure if they're going somewhere with it, or just throwing it in there for the heck of it?
Seems to me that they've combined the characters of Franklin and Mickey from the books. I'm not impressed, so far.

Can anyone who knows the series and the books tell me: at this point, does Queen Sophie know that Russell Edgington wants her queendom? Did Russell know before he kidnapped Bill that she and Eric are selling V? If not, how was he going to use Bill (and, I guess, Sookie) to further his plans?
This season is starting to drag on without any real direction. Luckily, it has the characters to carry it so it's all good.
The humor has really picked up, and it's the way I like it -- dark, with pure psychopaths.
Franklin is hilarious. "Watch how fast I can type motherfucker"

Shoot son! This episode was pretty violent, and here I was thinking I was desensitized to these things. (I mean, "I will wear your rib cage for a hat" is pretty much as gruesome an image as I've ever conjured...)

Possible spoilers follow:
If I remember correctly, Sophie agrees to the marriage for political reasons (never much portrayed conflict about it that I remember) but there is a huge scam by her betrothed to discredit her that Sookie helps thwart.
Don't recall there being any Queen endorsed selling of V, no magister terrorism etc. in the books at all. The big business that the Queen's been behind is a database she had Bill secretly develop to catalog all the vampires in the world that she (and Bill) would then sell.

Yeah, the Magister story arc is kind of...boring. And why didn't they use the vamp dbase idea in the show? That was great in the books. Now we've got Bill and everyone talking about "what Sookie is" which doesn't even come into play until much later.
All in all though, good season. And Debbie is exactly as I pictured her!!!

I remember disliking the database storyline from the books, but I should probably go through all of them again anyway.
Whose bedroom was Hadley coming out of when Eric gave her his message for Sookie? Her own? Is Russell letting her stay with the queen to keep Sophie calm?
AuburnAssassin
08-10-2010, 11:43 PM
My interpretation is she came from Sophie's room. While Russell and Sophie are married, it's for appearances and political / power building reasons only. Both parties had solid reasons for marrying, though Alan Ball kept it much simpler and went with blackmail. Russell has his lover and Sophie has hers. I'm sure Sophie negotiated Hadley's presence there during their "honeymoon". If they follow the books, married royalty only spent time together once a year or even less frequently after the honeymoon period ended. So Sophie would eventually go back to New Orleans.
The only thing I didn't like about the databases in the books was that it is dated already--discs that they mail out. If Charlaine rewrote the story today, Bill would sell subscriptions to login to the database then collect surfing data via cookies and do targeted marketing. "Come to Louisiana for your next vacation! Four out of five vampires rate it as the most delicious attraction in the south." "True Blood AB Premium...when you want something more exotic than O"

SPOILERS ABOUND!
I never read the books (have heard many times over that the show is much better), so I can't comment on that angle, but:
I don't really like where this season seems to be going (the whole Fairy Land thing, plus the witch arc with Lafayette). It feels to me like they're throwing in every paranormal cliché plus the kitchen sink at this point.
Season 2 with Marianne was actually my favorite--yes, it introduced Even More Paranormals!, but the main arc involved all the characters in an interesting, cohesive way. And Marianne was a wonderful villain. You've got to love a hedonistic baddie who tells you to celebrate yourself.
Season 3 was where the show started to lose me. Werewolves vs. vampires--really? How utterly cliché. I also couldn't STAND Jason's arc with the meth head family. There was zero chemistry between him and the werepanther chick. Plus she was just irritating--uneducated, unsympathetic, and obnoxious.
In S4, I'm mainly interested in Sookie and Eric's budding romance. Never cared for Bill. He's just too bland. Eric, however, is one of the few characters I truly like and sympathize with (Lafayette and Tara being the others--the black characters get the BEST writing and narrative arcs by far).
I also hope Bill gets his comeuppance. IMO, he's abused Sookie's trust and betrayed/hurt her too many times. And he betrayed Eric when Eric hadn't really made any move against him. Sookie is a fool for going back to Bill time and again. Eric may be little better for her in the long run, but at least he doesn't treat her like a helpless, brainless doll.
Also, I'm crushed that Queen Sophie-Anne is apparently killed off. I loved Evan Rachel Wood in that role, and her rivalry with Russell Edgington was hilarious. Hopefully we get to see more vampire politics and less monster-of-the-week this season.

Everyone looks soooooooooooo much better!
Bill got rid of those unsightly muttonchops!
Jesus shaved off that annoying sparse goatee!
Tara straightened her hair...and still looks beautiful!
Lafayette has a mohawk!
But Eric...should have stayed with his S1 hair.
And that redheaded waitress. Hoo boy, I don't know what that 'do is called but it don't work.
Episode 2 is on demand already. The HBO-Go app had a promo and the good people at the network saw fit to release the ep to all their subscribers shortly after.

And that redheaded waitress. Hoo boy, I don't know what that 'do is called but it don't work.
She wore a wig for the first three seasons, got tired of it, then dyed her actual hair red so she could ditch it for this season. So yeah, that's her actual hair this year. LOL

Season 3 was worth it for Dennis O'Hare alone. I could've done without Sookie delving into the depths of idiocy for the entire season though. And, of course, there's Alexander Skarsgard.......
Oh, and Pam. How has no one mentioned Pam? Love her.

My thoughts on episode 1 (SPOILER WARNING!):
Faery-land: Seriously? Don't tell me this was the best they could come up with on a show with the kind of budget this must have.
Sookie: Meh.
Bill: Color me not surprised by his new political aspiration. Continuing to be Liar McLiarpants does not endear me to you.
Eric: YES, MORE OF THIS, PLEASE.
Lafayette: Not a fan of the hair. Or the subdued attitude around Jesus. Admit to some curiosity as to where they are taking this witch angle.
Jason: I adore the new look and the new level of responsibility he has taken, but I don't like Crystal and am not impressed that she's supposed to come back. His head-over-heels infatuation did not and still does not make sense to me.
Sam: Please stop being angrypants. :( Though that one scene with the horses was AWESOME.
Tara: Wut. No, seriously. Wut.
Overall? I still want to know where all of this newfangled stuff is going.

Ep 2:
Digging Bill sans Sookie and with more power. The change in dynamic between him and Eric is interesting especially since Eric will be so vulnerable this season. Maybe Bill will be a good villain.
All the Hotshot crap can go away. It's not, but I wish it would.
I hate that Andy's on V. They finally showed him as a capable detective in season three and he's back to bumbling again.
Sookie seems like less of a bitch as well. I really wanted to punch her through most of season 3. Most of that season seemed forced.

I like that Jason seems to be growing up, but I'm not really into that whole storyline or the girl he's so crazy about.
Re: Andy. They finally showed him as a capable detective in season three and he's back to bumbling again.
I'm hating this, too. I'm a big Andy fan. I loved when he, Sam and Jason worked together (hilariously) in S2, and I love that he protected Jason after Eggs' death. One of my favorite Andy moments was his tearful confession to Tara--that was an awesome moment, particularly seeing her realize that nothing was what she thought it was.
I can only hope Ball's putting the character through this stuff again because it's going to end up making him heroic, somehow. He'll have to be redeemed in a big way--he's come too far to become comic relief again. I hope!
There seems to be the tendency for the humans in True Blood to always do the stupid thing or simply be dumbasses (or be portrayed as everyone else thinking they're dumbasses), while the characters with supernatural elements are so much more wise, strong and capable. This irks me to no end, if I let myself think about it too long.
The only human I can think of who hasn't shown any sign of supernatural powers who isn't portrayed as bumbling or perceived by others to be bumbling most of the time is Tara, and she's suffered nothing but abuse of one form or another through the whole show--so far, at least.

I do like this and I like that he's probably going to get screwed over big time with Crystal if the writers follow the book for that plot arc. I want to see how new Jason deals with it.
I think part of Andy reverting is maybe to highlight Jason's growth. I don't mind Andy being an addict, but that character deserves more with his writing than he's got at the moment.

I think you're right. They've definitely switched roles for right now, at least, with Jason taking care of him and watching out for him. I hope it's worth the payoff, because I agree there's far more to Andy than we've seen so far. I want S3 Andy to come back in a big way.

Diana_Rajchel
07-06-2011, 06:46 AM
I've read the books so I think it actually, oddly, makes me slightly more forgiving of the show because it always seems to come back to the major plot points. Sookie remains strong throughout, and while S3 was a bit of a turnoff for me - the whole thing with Tara and the vampire was in the books, but it was a very different violence dynamic as I think she actually "belonged" to Russel Edgington, it's been awhile so I could have that wrong. Just as Maryanne's maenad awesomeness was ruined by her possessing people, when in the books she happened to be around for what they were already darn well going to do with or without her.
I don't mind the menage of supernaturals, but I really mind where they're going with Lafayette. I was hoping for a cool shamanic story arc crossing into ancestors for him and Jesus; this whole Wiccan arc just ticks me off, and seems like a missed opportunity.
On the other hand, I liked the fae thing because it was actually more true to Celtic lore about faeries, and because of that, the low-tech approach appealed to me.

Has it jumped the shark?
I can't even make it through Episode 3. It's just not holding my attention. (Yes, I'm a week behind.) I was pretty devoted up until this season. Is this just me?
Oh well. I might as well take a break since I'm trying to read the latest book and I start to get confused between the two.

I don't think it has, but I'm loving the slightly lighter tone to some of it. I thought the first episode was meh, but episode 2 was much better. In all honestly, that's mostly because of Eric, Pam and Sookie. Alcide added a nice touch tonight, at the pond or whatever it was. I love being able to laugh one minute and be horrified the next.
I'm less invested in the other storylines. I can't stand the witch--is she supposed to seem like a total flake? Terry and Arlene aren't on nearly enough, Andy's being misused, and the Hotshot thing, ugh. Tommy's parents are also ugh.
But I have hopes that those things will improve, and until then I'm drawn in by Eric's storyline.
I think the show suffers from the same problem it had last year--too many different stories that don't get enough time. We're already a third of the way through the season, and some characters really don't have very developed stories. That's disappointing. They could run a couple of seasons without ever introducing a new character and just give us the ones we already love, and I'd be a happy camper. But they throw a bunch of new ones in and it dilutes the whole, IMO.
What's good about the show, in my opinion, is very, very good, though.
I'm looking forward to next week!

I've been reading the books, and I think Sookie may have some precog or otherwise psychic abilities beyond mine-reading.
You see these instances where she does things that are described in narrative as strange, or just strange in and of themselves, and you wonder.
Three cases in point:
--Getting the right jacket and keys on the first try at the gas station, at random, in Club Dead.
--Finding Eric in Dead to the World. Apparently she just decided to take a different route home that time and found him.
--Sookie running back inside the burning house in Dead as a Doornail and closing that door.
I may have missed other, more subtle, ones.

I love this series
Anna Paquin has received a lot of hate for her portrayal of Sookie Stackhouse, but I think she plays her well. She does great with the material she is given.
I love the fact that AB doesn't stick to just the book, and includes various avenues, and creates other characters, but stays true to the heart of the book. I find season 4 to be the best yet. It's suspenseful, it's thrilling, has humour, romance, all of the good stuff.
I'll admit in season 3 it dragged, particularly hated Lafayette's storyline (and I love LaLa), and Sam's. They just didn't engage me. But in season 4, it seems to have slotted nicely into place. We're seeing a side of Bill that we haven't before, and I'm actually liking him more now that he's not with Sookie. I'm Team Eric all the way (if you've read the books, you'll know why), but Bill is proving himself to be a good, complex character.
Pam is brilliant as per usual, as is Jason, and the rest. One character I've consistently disliked is Tara, who blames the world and his wife for her problems, and has a habit of stereotyping a group of people (e.g vampires) for the actions of one, without thought to the consequences. Yet, she complains about being stereotyped herself.
I think what this show does well is that it identifies the plot early, it doesn't swim around the issue, it gets into it, and at the end of each episode we are always left wanting more. It's well-acted by all cast members, it's believable, the characters that we are meant to like we do, and the characters we are meant to hate, we do. Or at least I do.
It's picking up its stride now, and I hope it continues for many more seasons to come.

I'm still compelled by what's happening and will happen with Sookie, Eric and Bill. I love Pam. And I'm actually interested in what's going to happen between Jessica, Hoyt and Jason. I'm so glad Hotshot hasn't come up in a while. And I was hopeful for the Sam and Tommy storylines when Tommy did what he did (I don't want to spoil anyone who's behind) and Sam helped him out. But then I think they had Tommy act in a way that I don't understand. Are they trying to prove he's really nothing but scum with no sense of loyalty at all? And why?
Everything but Sookie/Eric/Bill/Pam and Jessica/Hoyt/Jason is leaving me cold in a big way. I adore Lafayette--he, Eric and Pam are my favorite characters. But aside from some Lafayette-witty lines, he's so underused. What happened last night at the end was interesting, but I'm just not feeling it.
The actress who plays Marnie seriously needs to pick an accent and stick to it. That drives me crazy and throws me right out every time she lets it slip, even though a perfect accent still wouldn't help her acting. I really don't like her, and I wanted to.
But I also want Andy to be the hero, Tara to actually fall for a vampire who treats her decently and for Bill, Sookie and Eric to have a threesome--all things I'm not likely to get. :P
I'd also like the human characters to stop being depicted as either idiots or only vessels to be used by supernatural forces, or both. I dislike the way only those with some sort of power come off as intelligent, reasonable and as together as possible. Plain old humans are either stupid, weak, victims or ridiculous, it seems.

Season 5 is just around the corner ... June 10th. A nice birthday present for me (June 9th).
While there is a lot of the show (all seasons thus far) that I haven't liked, I have to remember that this is Alan Ball's fan fiction version. He was just lucky enough to have the means to take his fan fiction and put it up on the big screen.
Just off the top of my head ...
Hate:
> Taking just a barely-mentioned moment in the books and creating a whole season of Mariann the Maenad. HUH?
> The whole Tommy and parents storyline.
> The lack of Niall ... was Queen Mab even mentioned in the books (really can't remember, but if so, she was barely mentioned too). That includes Claudine ... hate she isn't the cool fairy godmother as in the books .... or that Claude isn't the self-centered sexy stripper, owner of Hooligan's.
> Missing the whole Club Dead scene + when Eric pulls the steak from out of Sookie's side. That's a super important part of their relationship. First and only time Eric glamoured her (to help with the pain).
> No Bubba
> Not nearly enough of Pam, as in the books. The show doesn't have enough snarky comments.
> If HBO's The Game of Thrones can handle, successfully, multiple major character stories ... then so can TB, especially since TB has 2-3 more episodes a season than GOT. Like previously mentioned, story lines have been half-hearted.
Like:
> Lala is still alive!
> Alexander Skarsgaard *wiggles eyebrows*
> Although brief, I like how they handled the amnesia story.
> Anna Paquinn has done a decent job of playing Sookie. Although, I wish she didn't so what other female celebs do - after the first season, start to lose weight (by whatever methods) so they become skin and bones and still think they look sexy. Sookie is supposed to have curves and some meat on her bones ... not boney collarbones and hips.
Unless Hell's Kitchen comes on this summer, True Blood is all I have to watch, with Game of Thrones ending next week.
