Hi,

I've picked up a few potential homes for ARCs, but haven't seen a dedicated thread on it... or at least, I haven't been able to find it.

So, what are the publications and/or online resources that new writers must make a point of sending an ARC for review?

Doesn't your publisher's marketing department handle that? What you should worry about is writing your next book.

Incidentally, I visited your myspace page and could not find the slightest indication how to buy your book, should I have wanted to.

The publisher will send out some ARCs, yes, but that doesn't mean the author shouldn't look for other options.

I would say, first of all, find out where your publisher is already sending ARCs. No need to duplicate effort.

Second, figure out likely possibilities for press (your local papers and/or magazines) that the publisher might have missed. If the publisher is willing to cultivate those markets as well, great! If not, send ARCs there.

Third -- well, I'm still figuring out what comes third myself! So I will watch this thread with interest. But I know that it's going to vary a lot depending on the genre of book.

Claudia gave good advice. I assume you wouldn't be asking if your publisher handled that. Any more authors are expected to handle more of the book promotion efforts and ultimately you're responsible for it anyway, so I'd make a list of potential media contacts and independent bookstores who might be interested. Contact them first instead of just sending them out. Good luck.

It is a good idea to see if your publsiher does do any routinely to avoid a double up. Then it is a matter of judging which places will do a review, and which will reach the most people in your target demographic. Other authors in the genre should be able to help.

Well, Berry, even if you wanted to, you couldn't... which is why you didn't.

My publisher's marketing department is too busy pulling out the brown M&Ms for me... and if they did send ARCs (or actually had a marketing department per se... did I say I was with Gollancz?), I wouldn't be asking, right?

All sage advice otherwise... although I figured as much and I just thought it would be useful to compile a list at a forum like this with a gazzillion writers in similar boats.
