I know my friend who teacher 4th grade in California does a lot of grammar, but I don't know whether she is teaching it for the first time or just playing catch-up from what they didn't get earlier. She also is a writer, so she may be more grammar-oriented than most teachers.

First grade. My son started learning the basics of a sentence in first grade.

Heh. Mine are learning vowels and constants in kindergarten. Or not, since my current one will most likely be repeating it.

But that's because we just now identified his learning disability and are in the process of helping him learn in the way HE needs.

My youngest is in the second grade. They are for sure deep into grammar right now. Verbs and nouns are a big topic. First grade really started focusing on the sentences. They learned to read in Kindergarten (a lot of it was sight-reading though).
It's pretty early on now-a-days.

This is good to know. My current picture book, which I'm really excited about, uses the words "verbs" and "nouns." My target age is 4-7. I'm hoping that my audience, even if not truly understanding what a verb or noun is, will at least have heard mention of the words. I think it's also an opportunity for the teacher or parent to open up a dialogue about what is a noun and what is a verb. What are some other verbs and nouns in the story we just read? That sort of thing.
