You can try contacting publishers directly and let them know you're accepting review copies for publication in a newspaper.

Be prepared for the deluge of ARCs. :D

Or, you can contact authors individually. Most of them should be able to arrange for their publishers to send you ARCs.

Good luck and have fun - and on behalf of up and coming authors everywhere, thank you! :)

What a really interesting idea. I wanted to do something similar through BBT, but just naturally assumed I was neither big enough nor connected enough to get ARCs to review.

Very interesting.

I have been asked to do book reviews for a small, local paper, and would like very much to use this as an opportunity to support up and coming authors. How do I get my hands on ARC books?

Is this even a possibility for me?
I'll echo this - contact the publisher. We get asked all the time for ARCs, and I almost always accomodate. Almost.

If someone requests an ARC and they have a readership of a couple hundred, chances are I may pass, especially if they aren't in the author's hometown. We always honor a hometown request. We print about a 100 ARCs - that's a lot for little spuds like us. Our distributor gets the lion's share, and we get the rest to send out to the trade mags. On top of that, we'll get requests to review a book in consideration of an author event. We never turn those down either.

So while it may sound snobby, it's a matter of economics. Where can I get the most bang for my buck? It's a case by case consideration, and the publisher may ask you a few questions before sending the ARC out. Have fun with the reviews.

Mostly inside my own head.
Be sure to mention "for a small town print newspaper" up front when you ask publishers or authors. With the plethora of online "reviewers" begging ARCs these days, some publishers are getting a bit picky about who goes on their mailing list.

And, by the way, it's just "ARC" not "ARC book." :)

"ARC fiction novel" sounds better. More professionaler.

Remember that your goal in writing reviews is to have them in the paper BEFORE or JUST AS the book hits the shelf. At first, you can probably just review ones that are newly released, but eventually, if the gig keeps up, your readers are going to want to know about next month's books. One way to keep "in the know" about this is to visit the Publisher's Weekly site, where publishers put out a list of upcoming novels and non-fic titles from various publishers--months in advance. Then, check with your local bookstore managers/owners to find out what type of books are really popular. The more popular the genre, the better the likelihood that reviews of upcoming books in that genre will get read (which keeps people reading your reviews!) It's fine to stick in a few books that you like to expand the interests of the newspaper's readers, but at first try to stick with things they already like.

Good luck, and let me know if you ever need any romance novels. I know a LOT of romance authors who would be happy to send ARCs, because they don't often get reviewed in papers. :)

Thanks, Cathy. I had thought of that when I took the gig, and realized I'd probably be reading works I won't necessarily like. However, I'm really looking forward to doing this, and hope I can keep it up!

(And I'll let you know about the romance titles....I'm sure I'll be needing them. I want to review a variety, after all!)

Smaller publishers are great about being responsive to ARC requests (though you'll often have to request one book at a time), as are authors--but it's tough to get the time of day from the larger publishers. I have a bit of web and print presence as a reviewer, plus some other relevant credentials, but I have had tremendous difficulty getting anyone at the bigger houses to pay attention to my requests to be put on their reviewer lists--or, if someone does respond, getting them to honor a promise to provide ARCs.

If you check the websites of the larger publishers, they often require you to fax your request for review copies. Forget about getting any kind of a response this way; I've tried it, and it doesn't work. Where I've had success, it's the result of getting a contact name in the publisher's publicity department and approaching that person directly.

I don't mean to sound discouraging or negative--you can get results if you're persistent. It can be a frustrating slog, though.

That's a good question right now.

Very interesting.

Pete, Coyote's guidelines specifically say we don't do reviews, but I've still been contacted by a couple of self-published authors asking if they could send a copy to me to review. I imagine, if you were actively seeking books to review for BBT, you'd have no trouble getting ARCs from the small presses.

I mentioned it to the boss man. We'll see what happens, in the fullness of time. Apparently we already receive ARCs (we meaning him) and just haven't had a chance to do anything about it. It was interesting to know.

What I would love to know is how to get on a comic book review list. That would make my world a happier place.
