Haven't you just described IM-speak? Every teen with fingers is already fluent.

In a way I guess it's IM speak, but the people passing that bulletina round, as well as the website linked is all about making that what we teach our kids in school.

Z, I can't believe you brough this here! It isn't excatly IM speak. If you notice they actully respell words. IM speak shortens words for the most part. This movement is actully about respelling words completly. If you notice 'i' has been replaced with 'y' and that many words new 'improved' spelling are actully based on the prunciation of those words commonly found in english venucular but it isn't actully the correct way to prononce them.

North of there and South of here...
In a way it reminds me of shorthand - where you break a word down to its basic sounds. Makes it quicker to write using symbols related to common sounds.

But reading shorthand is easier than reading that... :)

There's actually a term fro this sort of spelling, but I can't recall it. It's really old news. I first saw it more than thirty years ago. It may stand more of a chance now because IM is so common, but I doubt it.

On the surface, it sounds like a halfway decent idea, but when it's actually put into practice it creates as many problems as it solves, so I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon.

I remember an email I received from my mother a few months ago, that dealt with this very thing. I think it was a joke, if I am not mistaken.

The ending had something to do with every English-speaking person writing in German by the time the new system was in full force.

It reminds me of this post, about a spoof email that was circulating a few years back. It was created in response to a German spelling reform which was almost as ridiculous:

Here is his latest response...lol Apparently, we dont get that this movement is happening now!

I just wanna sey dat an igonorant person is who has lack of knowledge & info. In dis case u didn't even kno abaut dis muvment so ther's lack of knowledge & ignorance of ur part. Ignorance is wat u actually showd by seying dat de SSSocyety promotes ignorance without iven knowing haw meny nations ar involvd in dis matter. I just deeply disagree wid dis kyn ov ryting sistem dat tends tu ivolv enywey. Whether peepl lyk it or not. I du bileev in it & so I contribiut. By de wey, I surely kno haw tu spel foneticly, logically & illogically. Actually I wonder haw com dey didn't think ov ryting de word beautiful as...
... beeauttiphul. Dam, I'd rather ryte biutiful. As simple as dat. Thank u for ur greit atention.

Aruna, that post about the german was hilarious! I giggled for a while thinking about it.

That's a good question right now.
It sounds like the MySpace poster is an adherent of simplified spelling. It's a real movement, but fortunately, not that popular. I once had a classmate in an upper-level college writing class who was a proponent of the system.
