I was thinking about starting something that’s been bouncing around in my head. It's an ms about a werewolf cowboy or possible a werefox cowgirl. Basically combining my two loves, western romance and paranormal romance. I was wondering if any one had ever heard of this being done and if so where or by whom.

If you Google the words "western" and "werewolf" together, you'll find some hits. But writing isn't about coming up with something that absolutely no one has ever done before, it's about coming up with something you want to write and doing it well enough so that people want to read it. Best of luck with it!

All I got when I Googled it was one book Walking Wolf: A Weird Western by Nancy Collins and it's based in the early 19th century with native americans. I'm thinking more of a contempary view on the whole thing. And I understand writings not about coming up with something brand new. But if someones done it all ready I'd like to see how they did it, so I'm not rehashing something.

Oh, sure. There are several instances. I'll have to look around for the titles. Patricia Simpson wrote a story called Dark Horse, as part of her Dark Tarot series. It was definitely a paranormal western, but not a shapeshifting story. I'll have to look around for some of the others. I'm drawing a blank this morning on names.

But that's not to say that there's not room for MORE shapeshifter cowboys. Feel free to create a new world! :)

Here are some you might have missed:

Review of Once a Wolf by Susan Krinard: "Fans of werewolf romances or western romances will fully enjoy Ms. Krinard's blending of the two sub-genres into an exciting novel."

Catalog listing for Moon Dance by S.P. Somtow: "Western werewolf novel that helped kick off the modern werewolf revival."

A self-published werewolf western called The West Wolf

There are references to short stories you might try to find, like this one: "The weird western is older than some think. Weird Tales published "A Werewolf Western" in September 1942."

and this even earlier one, by Max Brand: Werewolf, Western Story Magazine Dec 18 1926 (collected in a couple of anthologies)

or one in the anthology Isaac Asimov's Werewolves, where "The American Western frontier provides the backdrop"

There's a western werewolf movie called Mad At the Moon

and another in production called High Moon

There's a western werewolf comic under way as well.

If I were you, I would also check the world-building in the role-playing game Werewolf: The Wild West

Google is your friend--just remember to look beyond the first page of hits! ;)

Krinard did another historical werewolf western for HQN recently - TO TAME A WOLF. For what it's worth, it did pretty well for them!

Thanks for the links I did miss the one Once a wolf, but the other ones weren't what I was looking for since I was looking for romance or Erotic stories based in this time period.
