Picture Story Book Writers & Illustrators - An Approachable Market

This is not my field, but recently at a conference/fair I met someone who is an editor and claims to be approachable for manuscripts from picture story writers so am passing along the info to AW writers.

She is an editor at Flashlight Press - I wrote up the whole thing in my blog in the post Jerusalem International Book Fair - Flashlight Press (They are NY based).

So if you are in this genre and looking for an open approachable market this may be a good bet.

faster you guys are I would assume the better it is..but I know this editor is open to new writers and actually eager to find some really good books...

I also assume picture story books are incredibly difficult to write...so you guys have my complete respect...

Thanks for the link Teddy. From what I saw on the site and the extra pages on amazon, their illustrators are certainly fabulous. IMO, any picture book author would be lucky to be paired with one of them.

Thanks for the lead Teddy G!

I am the recipient of my first pb manuscript rejection from an international pub house today. The gentleman who replied did so by email and was so kind that I felt more proud than disappointed to have earned my first notch in my lipstick case. This lead helps me be proactive in my ongoing goal to have 20 ongoing queries until I sell the darned thing....down to 19 this morning...back up to 20 this afternoon thanks to this lead.

As promised, just to let you know that I had a response from Shari at Flashlight today, so not to worry ladies and gents she is still wading through your queries.

Mine was in the negative because the main adult of the story was the grandmother and she's had a few of those recently (blast, why didn't I make it an elderly aunt!) but she did invite me to submit anything else suitable.

I'm wondering if it would be unprofessional if my daughter sent an email (I'd help with the query) with a link to her DeviantArt account, which houses a host of wonderful illustrations. She's taking a year off to make money for college (I can't afford to pay... yet) and this might be a good outlet for her.

Received a positive response yesterday (4/30/07) by email.

We (my cowriter and I) were asked to send one of the five PB book storylines I described in my query. Responder mentioned Teddy and promised to get back to me as soon as possible--I guess that means there may be another delay before the submission gets reviewed.

We're going to look it over with a fine tooth comb and send it off..

Rejected. Cute but way too short. They want 1000 words.

That's a lot of rhyme and meter to worry about. Perhaps they missed that my story was rhyming.

Basically, they liked the concept. I'm thinking of doing it over in prose and sending it back.
