I'm trying to figure out which genre is appropriate for my short story. My topic is mental illness. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's hard to tell from just that. Offhand, I would say general fiction or what some people call mainstream/contemporary.

Is this fiction, or non-fiction?

I would still call it contemporary, I think.

Is this twenty questions?

It could still be anything. It could be literary, comedy, sci-fi, horror, slice-of-life, romance.........

I mentioned it was hard to tell, but I'm guessing she could already assign it to one of those latter genres if it was.

I'm assuming she just wants to give an idea of the type of writing to whoever she's submitting it to.
