Apparently it was a collection of vaguely epic or even Homeric commemorative songs, perhaps related to the Greek thiasos ceremony and the Ugaritic/Phonecian/Samaritan/Israelite Marzeah(asperation dotted h) where heros in the underworld dwelling with the gods are commemorated in a supper ceremony. And that is all connected via the Septuagint (translating Marzeah with thiasos) and the prophet Amos' tendentious description of the Samaritan Marzeah...(to quote a thread of mine called Dream Dates in the Historical Writing section)
