My name is Rich Helms. Most of my "writing" is computer software but for the last few years I have written freelance automotive for the Toronto Sun newspaper. My transportation interest is unusual vehicles. I drive a Mercedes Smart car and have written many articles on it.

Collection of my Smart car articles.

My most recent work revolves around experiencing unusual vehicles like driving a 70 ton mining dump truck, riding in an airport tug towing a 767 and pocketbike racing.

Collection of my Toronto Sun articles.

I am on the board of directors for the Writers' Circle of Durham Region where I create the website.

My current non-transportation writing interests are in WordPress and self-publishing. I have produced a workbook/workshop on WordPress. I am working on a epublishing workshop.

Welcome Rich! You must get good mileage from your Smart car. How much room do they have? Is there much room for luggage?

Smart cars

Yea the smart car gets great mileage. I have driven it to 19 states from the Toronto, Ontario Canada area where I live. I average about 60 MPG on trips.

It is a 2 seater and there is enough room for two suit cases. My wife and I are driving it to Madison Georgia in May for the Microcar festival.

I have an article introducing the smart in the next issue of MINUTIA, the Newsletter of the Microcar & Minicar Club. Canada has had smart cars since Sept 2004. The US will get then in 1Q 2008.

As there is no hood up front or trunk in the back, the car is basically all passenger compartment. The engine is under the back floor. In April I may drive it to Dallas. That would be a fun trip.

It has been a while since I did automotive writing. In 2010 I wrote a book on Database design for Packt Publishing. For the past year and a half my focus has been on writing about book trailers and how to design them. I was originally asked to create a workshop for WCDR. I knew the video editing side and figured how hard could it be to find sites on writing book trailers.

All of the articles I found were on how to use Animoto, iMovie or Windows movie maker but nothing on how to write a trailer. This is like teaching a person to use MS Word and saying now go write a novel.

I began studying trailers looking common elements. Most trailers are about as exciting as watching paint dry. Great trailers can cost a lot of money but that is far from a guarantee. Some wonderful trailers were low cost. I have been using the website http://booktrailer101.info as my sounding board and documentation for my workshops.
