Punch

If you know a punch is coming and you can't avoid it, would tensing up (like gritting your teeth) make it hurt worse? Or would it be better to relax?

There should be time to roll with the punch. This is what you're supposed to do. Honestly, if there's time to tense or not tense, there's time to roll, block, or duck.

But if you have to take the punch without rolling with it, I'd suggest tensing and tightening.

If you can't move out of the way, move into the punch with your forehead. Much stronger bone structure than nose or cheek. Since a good punch is strongest and fastest at a critical poitn, and the slugger is braced ofr it, reducing the travel distance of the punch by a few inches can help.

Read it somewhere, never tried it. Same place gave advice for taking a blow to the stomach - angling so that it hit along the plane of the abs to absorb the shock.

Being tied to a chair doesn't work so great with any techniques - your assailant will just punch again at his leisure.

You'd want your teeth clenched, so that they donb't slam together and break. There's a reason boxers wear mouthguards.

But I'm pretty sure your lizard-brain or whatever takes care of that stuff on its own. You can't not flinch from getting punched in the face. It's gonna happen.

You can't not flinch, true, but tensing up can make it worse.

Depends where you're getting hit. If you take a punch to the jaw, and your muscles aren't tensed, and you can't roll with the punch, you're going to have a broken jaw. Maybe a dislocated jaw on top of it.

But isn't there then a chance that the temple could be hit? From my understanding, that is not a good thing at all.

Your body will react much the same as it does by any impending blow: When you see it coming, your muscles will tense in an attempt to deflect the pain.

If you don't see it coming, being relaxed won't soften the blow, and may in fact cause further damage. Just ask Harry Houdini.
