I have been told by a number of people that my novel would make a good movie; some I know, most I don't.

How would one go about submitting a manuscript to a screenwriter, etc. Where do you begin and what is the process?

Thanks

I've done 2 of my own adaptations: novel to screenplay.

1. get software like Final Draft
2. break story up into sections (Treatment)
3. Follow the prompts in the software
4. Leave out almost everything not heard of seen (some, for mood, can be left in)
5. Put aside the next few months to do it.

Regards,
Ly

Read screenplays. Read lots of screenplays. Secret of the universe.

If you haven't already, check out the screenwriting tips thread which has links to sites with free scripts for educational purposes.

Get your novel into the hands of producers.

Get your novel into the hands of producers.
(Dare I add...) Assuming it's been published, and is on its way to becoming a best-seller with a huge fan following that will pay money to watch the film. Which is what would make it appealing to producers.

Yep

in order to get in the door of the studio you have to say "I'm so and so and my book is a winner."

These people you DON'T know who tell you this would make a movie, who are they and how did they get a hold of your book?
Are they people that you've just kind of ended up in a group chatting with and the subject came up?

If enough people are telling you it sounds like a movie then the matter deserves some investigation.

Doesn't matter at all which route you end up taking, writing the script yourself or hiring/working with a screenwriter as a partner, you'll need to understand the craft.

SO, start reading.
Loads of scripts, prefferably in the genre of your story.
Read the posts here to get an idea of basic questions and craft issues.
Get some books. The Screenwriter's Bible is a must.
Read the tips over at Bill Martell's scriptsecrets and the WORDPLAY articles.

I hope you have fun, just... enjoy the ride and good luck to you.
