I read a news article this morning about a hunter who blasted a ring-neck duck out of the sky. He took the bird home and placed it in the refrigerator. Two days later, as his wife reached in the fridge, the duck lifted its head and stared at her. I imagine the woman was surprised.

The husband had to shoot the duck again so they could have it for dinner.

Just kidding. They took the bird to a vet. During surgery to repair gunshot damage to its wing, the fowl stopped breathing. The vet performed CPR and managed to get the bird breathing again.

For good reason, the duck has been nicknamed, Perky, and is expected to make a full recovery.

This reminds me of a story my vet told me. In college, he, for some reason, was given a couple of rats to disect or something. Since they were alive and they needed to be dead, he put them in his home freezer, thinking that would be humane.

So many days later, his mom opened the freezer and found two very much alive - very fat rats living in the freezer. They had huddled together for warmth and eaten food in the freezer.

They let the rats live and gave them to someone to keep as pets.

I have a hard time believing the story, but he swears it's the truth.

I wonder who got the vet bill?
That's a great question. Having had a change of heart, would the hunter venture to pay for the duck's treatment?

When I read the piece, I also wondered why the bird wasn't properly dressed before being placed in the fridge. And another thing I found out after the original post: The duck weighed one pound.

I'm not against hunting, per se, but a few ounces of meat might be better left in the sky.
