My Freshman year of college I had a wonderful but very creepy English professor who inspired a short story idea that's been festering in the back of my mind ever since her class.

She looked like a sweet old granny, dressed to fit the part, but had a peculiar fascination with death that extended well beyond the realm of mere scholarly interest. One of the assignments she gave the class was to write about what it would take to drive us to kill, and then write a narrative about our act of murder in as graphic of detail as possible.

My essay turned out to be one of the better things I've written to date, even though I was squirming through the entire process of writing it. The assignment sparked an idea, though, that was somewhat different.

What if a professor like mine used an assignment like this to get ideas for inventive killings? What if there was this sweet old college professor who handed out this assignment, then used the results to hunt down and kill all of the students in the manner described in their story?

I want to write it, but I don't know if having a character too much like this professor could cause me problems or not (and I'm kind of scared to ask her about it). Would it be wise to just write the story and try to mask her identity? Or should I ask her about it?

I remember an episode of Monk where something like this occured it made a great story. It would also make an intriguing read as it wouldn't just be about the teacher it would be about the motives, thoughts behind it etc..

As for should you tell your teacher its based on her, well I guess that depends on how much your actually basing on her, if its obvious then you need to change it as it could be seen as a negative thing on her personality (i'm sure there's a word for it but i can't remember what it is).

If you think its too obvious that its her then I would ask her and possibly change it.

I tend to base my characters on a mix of people I see around me so not all traits are in the one person, which makes them less obvious to whom its based around also I place them in different times and or places as well as situations.

I hope this helps!

You'd probably be better of asking the teacher. Unless this was really their masterplan all along, I'm pretty sure they sparked your interest in writing. Even better, it seems to be something you're itching to write, and something you had fun writing, usually turns out better than anything else.

Story

Write it. I think all good characters are based on real people.

I say go for it too. I have a former professor I'm hoping to work into a story one day as he was a real hoot and yet brilliant at his gig.

Eudora Welty was inspired by teachers in a lot of her writing. She wrote about it her autobiography, One Writer's Beginnings, I believe.

One of the best papers I did in an anthro class when I went back to college in the '90s was about the teaching tradition in families in a particular school in Mississippi. I interviewed nearly a dozen teachers who came from generations of teachers in their families. It was fascinating. One of those teachers, in fact, inspired another paper about the relationship between real life and literature. And yeah, there was a Eudora Welty tie-in with that one too.

Go for it - it seems like a great idea! I think I'd have her kill outside the circle of students, though. As none of the students would necessarily know of each others' ideas, the real murders wouldn't seem so coincidental.

That prof sounds really interesting to me!

I have to say write it and just make sure it's not too obvious you're writing the person in question as the character. You shouldn't have a problem. And I think you may be in for a bigger problem if you ask her, because she could sue is you decide to write it anyway. . .

Character

Never ask anyone if you can base a character on them. Very bad move.
