Hello. I am a writer with a completed manuscript. I almost made the mistake of signing a contract with PublishAmerica to publish my book, but upon reading their sample contract, I made the decision not to allow them to publish my book. Why? Well, it’s really quite simple: PublishAmerica is nothing more than a Print-on-Demand publisher trying to pass themselves off as a traditional publisher. I have devoted many years to writing and completing my book and the last thing I want is to publish my book through a company who obviously doesn't have my best interest at heart.

This message board is a very beneficial for new writers like myself. It allows us to know beforehand which publishers are out to scam us and which publishers are truly legit in helping new writers become published author. With that thought in mind, I have a simple request to ask the members of this message board: "I need help finding a traditional publisher who will be interested in publishing my novel."

Here is the back cover text of my novel as I would like for it to appear on the book:

A wondrous book of unimaginable power...
A mission to prevent the conception of the antichrist...
And in the midst of it all, a fallen archangel prince seeks to escape millennial imprisonment within the bottomless pit known as the Abyss.

In the days leading up to the second coming of Jesus Christ, a young woman named Monet Devereaux receives the Oracle Book--an ancient text capable of revealing past, present and future events--from her grandmother.

As time progresses and Monet survives her abduction to the kingdom of hell, she soon learns from an archangel swore to protect her from the forces of darkness that God has chosen her as the one who will prevent the conception of the antichrist from coming to pass.

Aided by the aforementioned archangel Acacia and a seasoned pastor named Benjamin Masterson, Monet embarks on an astonishing mission that will not only pit her and her companions against Satan but will also put her faith in God to the ultimate test as well.

Any information that can be provided will be appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone who response to this post. God bless and take care.

Once you've heard the truth, everything else is ju
Song: if it's a CBA book, a good place to start would be the Christian Writers Market Guide (2007 edition) by Sally Stuart. You should be able find a copy in your local Berean or Family Bookstore. In it she lists agents, periodicals, book publishers, what they're looking for, terms, contact info, the works. If it's an ABA book, Writer's Market 2007 does essentially the same job from a secular standpoint.

As always, it's buyer beware, so even if you find a house or three you think might be a good fit, research them well. Good luck!

PS: the publisher usually has final say on back cover copy.

I'd recommend finding books similar in theme to your own -- possibly starting at the local Christian bookstore -- and looking to see who the publishers are. Also, if you look in the current copy of Writer's Market, I believe there is a list at the back where publishers are listed by genre, and Religious or Inspirational might be a good place for you to begin.

Hi Songweaver,

Just a quick note .. I'm not sure that a Christian Publisher would be a good match. It sounds like this is using Christian mythology and building on it, rather than being a Christian book.

(Once you get into ancient non-biblical texts with magical powers, I suspect it is more in the Buffy / Omen type story rather than a book that Christian bookstores would be aiming at)

Take my comments with a few grains of salt .. it's been a couple of years since I last visited a Christian bookshop. Perhaps they are getting a wider range now. I suspect, however, that they won't have copies of 'The Exorcist' or 'Omen' !

Either way, a useful key (mentioned already) is simply to find books that are similar to yours in bookshops and target those publishers.

Good luck !

Mac
(PS: I've seen similar novels published under the name 'Signet' which appears to be an imprint of Penguin)

If you're looking for a commercial publisher (they aren't called 'traditional publishers,' they're just called 'publishers'), go to your local bookstore and see who published the books that you find there on the shelf that are similar to yours.

Best of luck to you.

Many publishers now do not look at unagented submissions, so you might wish to do some research into finding a literary agent. Nothing stops you from submitting to both agents and publishers at the same time.
