I have a 3 year old daughter and Im thinking about taking a stab at children's writing using her stories and imagination as reference / inspiration. I know most three year olds cant read but I find that they are pretty imaginative. Do you think trying to view the world through her stories would be interesting for children (and publishers??)

Suggestions are welcome.

Possibly, but if you are coming at this as a complete novice, then I suggest you have a look at her picture books for yourself. Analyse them - plot and characters - see what makes them work. If you are talking about writing picture books, then you need to know that it's an extremely difficult skill to master.

Have you done any writing before? Why not try writing some short stories for your daughter and see how they go down? I do think that it's far too early for you to be thinking about publishers - try writing first and see how it goes. In my experience, children respond eagerly to anything that's been specially written for them - why not try writing a series of picture book stories (under 1000 words) starring your daughter? You could get her to draw pictures to illustrate them! (I know, I know, but she'd probably find it lots of fun and you might be surprised at how she reacts to certain elements and not others).

Write first. Write lots. Publishers are not actively seeking picture book texts from new writers - they are swamped as it is. If you find you really enjoy writing for children, try reading up on picture book formats. There's a useful site here: http://www.write4kids.com/ which can tell you all about writing picture books.

Have fun - enjoy writing. Don't think about publishers yet!

My Daughters are my inspiration to write Children's Stories.

They are a living Story themselves. My oldest daughter was writing her name properly at 13 months old. ... Boy did she start early. She was using clear vocab since 4 months of age... her pediatrician was astonished. I swear the the day I brought her home she said Mommy!... 3 days old. heheh.

She is now 8 and has a large heart for horses. I wrote two Children's books for her. I hope to get them published first.

My youngest daughter now 6... is head over heels for Tinkerbell. Matter of fact, she is almost identical to Tinkerbell in a human sense. heheh.

I have written her many tales.

Again this is just my personal inspirations to write.

Good luck in everything you set out to do and what ever you do.... Finish It, hehehhe.

My daughter was the inspiration for a few of my stories. Mostly what worries her, and what makes her angry, and laugh.

But others have been inspired by the newspaper. I cut out any newstory that sounds like it could have a kid's angle. I have a BIG file of them.

How do your kids react when you write a story that includes your kids as the main characters? My 6 YO girl pitches a fit when I try to read the story but my 8 YO boy acts out his part. Then the 17 YO, well acts like a 17 YO.

I get my inspiration from way more than my kids, but yes, my kids too! Of course they're 5, 8 and 11, so sometimes they're just too old. Though I did write one about this past summer's swim lessons.

-- I have one that was inspired by my dog, and yet it's a boy who cooks.
-- A couple about various tooth fairies.
-- A couple of monster or witch (but in a light way) stories that came out of thin air.
-- Usually reading other PBs inspires me to spin off a character or a story line into something special. I do that with my OWN stories too! I take one line from a PB I wrote and can write a whole PB according to that line sometimes.
-- One is a gross-out story inspired by one my grandma used to tell.

And more.. I could go on forever...

There is this little voice inside my head...no wait that's the other thing. J/k.
I get inspiration from all sorts of things. I try to remember how I thought as a child, not always easy. Take yesterday, I was ironing my skirt for work and it said use a cool iron. I tried to imagine an 7 or 8 year old reading that and picturing a "cool" iron as one wearing sun glasses. No story just the thought you see?

I'm like BK. I just never grew up. I see everything in life as a story. Consequently, I wander around in a daze.

"Hmmm, imagine what could happen if everyone's cars suddenly turned into flying dragons and....dang....that was my exit."
