This may well be the wrong place to post this question (Mac can move it if desired), and the title is a little murky, but bear with me. It isn't a "writing novels" question, rather one of publication.
I dabble a bit in reprinting old out-of-copyright books, as an avocation mainly, but in doing this I've run across several long out-of-print but still copyright-protected works that would be of interest to make available in a similar way. I was reminded of this issue because I'm reading a Talbot Mundy novel, Black Light, originally published in 1930 and therefore still copyright protected in the U.S., but fairly recently reprinted by a small specialty press. I have several of Philip K. Dick's posthumously published works from similar micropresses.
My question, for those here who have publication/editing experience, is Assuming the copyright holders can be located, what arrangements would normally be made to secure permission to republish such material? Royalties? Up-front fees? What, and any estimates about how much?
