...even when you're not in the mood that particular day?

The 30 years I wasted between my last burst of writing creativity (back in college) and my current burst, which has been going on the past two years. Those 30 years are my constant reminder that the desire to write can desert me at any time, so I need to write my heart out while the desire is still with me.

Usually I motivate myself with taking a break from the story, but polishing up my outline thoroughly. I don't know why, but this seems far more interesting than writing the fiction itself...

It has to get done. And I'll invariably feel better afterwards.

Funny how this question never gets asked about a person's day job. Same thing, for me. I get up and write because writing is what I do.

If I'm not in the mood that day I go on to do something else. Maybe read or do some research for the WIP or something. I don't force myself to write if I don't feel like it any more than I don't force myself to exercise if I don't feel like it. Sometimes you do just need a metal health day.

Certainly not my vast publishing success. I do it because I like doing it. I can't make a living at it (at least not yet), so it has to be a fun hobby. I agree with Neuro that it's also an intellectual challenge: plotting, character development, creating interesting images, working toward creating something new (or at least doing it in a new way).

Well, like the Ferret - if I'm seriously not in the mood, that's the day I don't write. But what motivates me normally is being in the mood, being curious as to how that particular story I'm working on will turn out, having fun with the characters - and the fact that I haven't typed: The End yet.

I just wish I had that luxury. Unfortunately, the day job makes the decision for me.

I never let a day job interfere with my writing, even at the very beginning. A day job may be something you have to do, but it's never something that must interfere with writing every day.

The knowledge that if I don't do this, I have to go back to working a day job.

That was my first thought on reading this, too. I write, because that's what I do. On very, very rare occasions, I may skip a day, but that's no different than having a sick day at the office (which I occasionally did, even if the "sickness" was just lack of sleep and general crumminess.)

I know about wanting to write because of felling the need or enjoyment.
I love to write but I would want to know if I was really bad or not and that is hard to find out. If you watch American Idol some of the singers in there are really terrible but they were led to believe they had talent from friends and family or just their own ego. The cold truth hits them hard when they get an honest opinion. I would want to know the truth sooner rather then later.Friends and family are too kind, critique groups are too critical. I would want to know if it was a waste of time to write to attempt publication. Thats what I desire now. I have had ons short published and many in submission lingo but am starting a novel but may quit that before long.

Same here!

Although I love writing, I am a slacker.

Time helps me.
Each day I don't write, I put an X on the calendar. Each day I do, I put an O. The desire to see the calendar filled with O's is what pushes me forward.

I just got my calendar for the new year yesterday and, let me tell you, I was seriously floundering without it.

If I cannot place a single word on a page it means either I need to switch mediums or I am overdue for a break. I have never had a long standing lack of desire to write, there are too many stories waiting to be written to allow for that.

The Challenge.
And the desire to write. I want to find out if my teacher was really serious when he advised me never to give up writing. Which by the way i did.
Now I want to know 'if' I am any good. if i am not; I'll still go on.

Weird. :tongue

I hope that was a joke. If not, we need to get you a dictionary and underline the word 'Irony' for your perusal.

The knowledge that if I take one day off, I may never get back into the rhythm again. It's as though giving myself permission for a single day's break makes it that much easier to take another day off...and another.... It's far better to write garbage than to write nothing, I figure.

Of course, this is only when I have a work in progress. When I'm between stories, I've taken months--even years--off. But I don't want to do that again. So I'm working on that whole discipline thing.
