I have a story I am thinking of entering in the First Chapters contest but I am unsure of the genre. It's about a young man who becomes an amputee after being in the wrong place at the wrong time when there is a five car pile up due to a drunken driver. He overcomes being gravely injured and finds love over the internet, gets married, has kids and builds a life and ends with the death of his mother, who figures prominently in the story early on because she's his biggest supporter.
WHAT on Earth can I classify such a beast? It has all kinds of themes, but basically I have this main character move on to build limbs for other amputees. I knew such a young man, but this is not his story, however the protagonist reminds me of this young man, it's not a direct modeling. I want to call it inspirational, but think that is not fully it. What about calling it Mainstream? Could it go as Romance if its from last quarter its about his relationship with his SO later in life as well as being from a male perspective?
Or could it go as Contemporary-that Genre has me a little confused. Maybe someone can help me if I post in the SYW forum? Like the Synopsis? I would have to write one because this work has never had one written for it not has it got an outline. Today I have shaved off a lot of unnecessary words and have a few thousand left to shave off of it to make it submittable to the First Chapters contest. I suppose I can write an outline for it tomorrow or maybe try tonight if I can swing it. If I can would it be all right to post in the Contemporary/Mainstream forum with Walk of Fire?
