Anyone know if any of these publishers receive unagented queries or subs? Their websites don't say; emails aren't answered; they don't appear in my Writer's Market. Any clues greatly appreciated before I pay for a database that might not list them either. And, yes, I know that Vintage Dog Books is a U.K. organization. Thanks!

Just from glancing around the web, it doesn't appear that the American Kennel Club is a publisher. It's an AUTHOR. There are several publishers who put out their books, such as this one, by Random House. It appears that the books are written by AKC staff and members, so I don't know that there's a way to query through them, short sending a letter to a Board member to get on the agenda and working from within.

I know that's the same thing as Ducks Unlimited, which is why I thought to look it up. I was a member of DU for years, and all of their books are written by staff or are farmed out to pre-selected outdoor writers or biologists.

Not sure about the others. But I'm sure someone will be by soon with info on them. From the selection you've picked, I'm presuming you have a proposal for a hunting dog guide? You might check the shelves at your local bookstore to see who all is publishing them. While it would be wonderful to have the official "stamp of approval" from a major organization, you might have better luck with a traditional publisher. Good luck!

Thanks, Cathy. Yes, searching in two major chain bookstores is exactly what I did -- on Jenna's advice! The listed organizations are the few for which I couldn't find guidelines. Most of the top traditional pubs don't take unagented material, of course. The AKC and DU books I studied didn't list anyone else as publisher. This book would be perfect for both of those organizations, if only I could reach the right someone ...

T.F.H. accepts unagented queries and submissions and will send you guidelines if you request them. Can't remember the name or e-mail of the last person I worked with there, but you can send questions to the e-mail addy on this page. They can be really slow to respond, but they do eventually get around to it.

ETA: The name was Laura Nelson, but that was back in '04 so I don't know if she's still there or not.

Thanks Anne. TFH responded after I'd posted this question, and I already have a copy of Barron's guidelines. So, we're off and running. No, wait -- that's horses, isn't it? I'm working with dogs here, so it's "sic 'em!"
