ACE IN THE HOLE is playing at the Film Forum in NYC Jan 12 -18.
This 1951 film is one of Billy Wilder's best.
Kirk Douglas, as a unscrupulous reporter, manipulates the rescue of a trapped mine worker in order to capitalize with his own exclusive reports. This is a blistering portrait of the media circus mentality that is now more dominant than ever (but has been around longer than we think).
Screenplay by Wilder, Lesser Samuels and Walter Newman.
Also known as THE BIG CARNIVAL.
If you are not in NYC, watch for this at your local arthouse cinema as it could be making the rounds.
